Grey’s Anatomy is one of the most popular shows of its time, premiering in 2005 and still continuing production today. Characters have come and gone throughout the 16 seasons, but through it all, Meredith Grey is there learning how to be the best doctor she can be and follow in her mother’s footsteps.

Many memorable episodes have been made, and fans definitely have their favorites. Viewers have rated the top episodes on IMDb, giving them a score out of 10, and most of them have done pretty well! Here are the best episodes of each season from the first half of the series.

8 Season 1: Episode 9 – Who’s Zoomin’ Who? – 8.7/10

George is experiencing a bit of an irritating problem down south, and after an inspection by Alex and some mocking from Izzie, George learns that he, unfortunately, has syphilis.

Chief Webber is experiencing problems too, but a little higher up. He keeps suddenly getting blurry vision in one eye, and during one of his surgeries, he has to stop and allow Bailey to finish for him. He confides in Derek, who says that they can run some tests, but Webber makes Derek promise to keep it a secret. Cristina is keeping a secret of her own – a pregnancy that she does not plan to go through with.

7 Season 2: Episode 16 – It’s The End Of The World – 9.5/10

Two episodes earned a 9.5 in season two, and this one turns out to be life-threatening for everyone. After fooling around in the backyard with some homemade explosives, a man comes into the ER with a live bomb inside of his body.

Currently keeping it from exploding is a young paramedic with her arm inside of him, and soon after her hand is replaced with Meredith’s. It’s a delicate cooperation between the surgical team and bomb squad to attempt to save everyone’s lives.

6 Season 3: Episode 9 – From A Whisper To A Scream – 8.9/10

It’s a fight for first place this season because a whopping four episodes hold the top spot. In this episode, Cristina is growing weary of covering for Burke, who has been having tremors with his hand but still wants to operate. He is not worried about the upcoming surgery he is supposed to perform on George’s father because he, supposedly, hasn’t had a tremor all week.

George, however, requests that Burke be replaced on the surgery, although he doesn’t give a reason why. When the chief requests a meeting with Burke, Burke fears that his secret may not be much of a secret anymore.

5 Season 4: Episode 17 – Freedom Part 2 – 8.8/10

Alex comes into the hospital with Rebecca, announcing that she has tried to kill herself. He doesn’t want to face what this means, and he claims that she does not need medication or a psych evaluation. Instead, he puts the responsibility on himself to watch her and make sure she is okay.

Meanwhile, Bailey puts Izzie in charge of the clinic as a change of pace, and Derek and Meredith are working on the end of their clinical trial with their last patient, Beth. Beth wants to go through with the surgery, even though it has killed every other patient, and Meredith agrees that she should. Derek is not confident about the idea.

4 Season 5: Episode 24 – Now Or Never – 9.6/10

Derek has a plan to operate on Izzie’s brain tumor, but it could leave her with memory problems, as it involves taking out a portion of her brain. Izzie doesn’t know whether she should go ahead with the surgery or not, but she eventually decides to have it done.

Elsewhere in the hospital, an unidentifiable man comes in who was hit by a bus as he pushed a young woman out of the way, saving her life. He can’t talk, but when he reveals who he is by tracing in Meredith’s hand, it turns out that the accident has hit too close to home for everyone in the hospital.

3 Season 6: Episode 23 – Sanctuary 9.6/10

Gary is an angry widower who is mad at Derek for obeying Gary’s wife’s wishes and letting her die, and Gary plans to get revenge. He enters the hospital with a gun, on the hunt to find Derek, and he shoots down anyone who comes in his way, including Alex and Charles.

The hospital scrambles into lockdown while Bailey and a patient try to work on Charles’ wound, and Izzie and Mark work on Alex’s. Gary eventually finds and shoots Derek in front of Meredith and Cristina. This episode and the one immediately following both received a score of 9.6.

2 Season 7: Episode 15 – Golden Hour – 8.6/10

The competition to become chief resident has begun, and Meredith is determined to prove that she has what it takes to hold the position. To do this, she volunteers to run the ER for the night, hoping that her skills shine through and show all that she has to offer.

In the course of an hour, Meredith deals with a man in denial about his chest pains, a four-year-old who needs a full leg cast for his broken femur, a patient with a knife stuck in his head after a brawl, and even Chief Webber’s wife Adele has come into the emergency room. Meredith certainly has her hands full.

1 Season 8: Episode 9 – Dark Was The Night – 9.3/10

Teddy’s husband Henry needs surgery, and she insists on having Cristina do it. Owen thinks it’s a bad idea, but Webber insists that they can have Cristina do the surgery without knowing who she is operating on.

Meanwhile, Meredith and Alex go to another hospital to transport a newborn back to Seattle, but when the ambulance breaks down during a terrible storm, they are sitting ducks and an accident waiting to happen, especially in a vehicle filled with oxygen tanks that could explode if they get hit.
