Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the most successful video games in the world, but it’s not without its faults. The game falls victim to various plot holes, like how Michael De Santa made his fortune while in witness protection with no job or how songs on the Grand Theft Auto 5 soundtrack reference California and L.A., even though it’s supposed to take place in a fictional universe. But perhaps the most perplexing plot hole is how Lester didn’t know what Trevor was up to at the start of the game.

Lester Crest is depicted as having the inside scoop on most criminal activities in Los Santos. When Michael needs help organizing a heist in Grand Theft Auto 5, he goes directly to his old comrade, who goes on to assist him in planning and pulling off various criminal heists and operations. While he may not be able to physically help with the heists, Lester’s knowledge proves to be a critical asset to Michael and his associates.

What’s perplexing, however, is that Lester is supposed to keep tabs on everyone in the criminal lifestyle. He was one of the only people who knew that Michael had faked his death and gone into witness protection in Grand Theft Auto 5’s Los Santos, for instance, speaking to how trustworthy and good at his job he was. But this is why it doesn’t make sense that Lester had no clue what Trevor was up to. Lester was able to keep up with Michael even though the government was hiding his identity, so even if Trevor had been locked up or gone off the radar, it’s a wonder Lester wasn’t able to find some information on Trevor’s whereabouts and activities.

GTAV’s Lester Should’ve Known Trevor’s Whereabouts

This plot hole would make more sense if players knew for a fact that Trevor was trying to keep a low profile and stay off people’s radars. He’s a Canadian citizen, so he could’ve easily gone back to his home country and laid low, making it more difficult for his old associates in the U.S. to track him down. But it’s very clear that Trevor wasn’t giving much thought to hiding his identity. When he’s introduced in GTA 5, it’s revealed he’s been operating a criminal business using his full legal name, Trevor Phillips Enterprises, which specialized in smuggling drugs and weapons in nearby Blaine County. Given that Trevor was so nearby and unabashedly using his full name, Lester should’ve caught on much earlier to his location.

Even though Lester tells Michael he’s unsure of where Trevor is, there’s always a chance he was lying to his former comrade. It’s unclear what motivation Lester would have for lying about Trevor’s whereabouts, but it almost makes more sense than assuming he simply didn’t know where Trevor was. But alas, Grand Theft Auto 5 doesn’t provide a clear answer to Lester’s slip-up, so it’s left for players to come up with their own explanation as to why he didn’t know where Trevor was.
