A YouTuber has used a GoPro camera to give himself a third person point of view in order to replicate video games like Grand Theft Auto. The long-running action game franchise is one of the most prominent in the video game industry; its most recent entry, Grand Theft Auto V, is the second best-selling video game of all time.

The third person perspective is an increasingly common one in the video game industry today. A lot of recent major releases, such as God of WarThe Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima use this point of view to highlight the beauty and detail of the game world while at the same time keeping the focus on the player character. It’s an efficient set up, and one that’s been a major part of the video game ecosystem since games first started appearing in three dimensions. Recently, the way this over the shoulder perspective has been arranged has made things complicated for some players who have partial blindness or similar visibility issues, but overall, it’s a tried and true way to convey relevant information to the player.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Recently, British user TGFbro decided to simulate this touchstone of the video game industry in real life. He rigged up an elaborate headset that shows the wearer only the video feed from a GoPro affixed to a pole attached to their back. This setup effectively simulated the appearance of a 3rd person video game, but not without some issues. As the first wearer in the video quickly discovered, there was about a two second delay in the transmission of the footage to the headset, meaning that everything going on around him was being experienced later than it was happening. This made effective coordination almost impossible, but that didn’t stop the YouTubers from unsuccessfully attempting to ride a bike with the headset on before moving on to a full-sized motor vehicle. A wooden scaffolding system was affixed to the back of the car for the GoPro to rest on, and then went the extra mile by spray painting the windows of the car black. This experiment went only slightly better than one would expect; the YouTubers took the car for a spin out in an empty field, ran over some cardboard, and then spun out and collided softly with a tree. Watch the chaos unfold below.

This is a pretty preposterous stunt, and frankly it’s surprising that the YouTubers didn’t get too injured in the process. Their antics do make for pretty entertaining video, and it’s quite nailbiting once the car starts moving, but viewers definitely should not try any of this at home, especially not the part where they try to cross the street.

YouTube has a long history of users pulling off some pretty ridiculous things for entertainment value. This one’s pretty high on the list, though. Plenty of video game fans have probably wondered what it would be like to live in a video game like GTA, and while TGFbro’s experiment probably isn’t exactly what they had in mind, it’s still a pretty novel attempt. Fans probably shouldn’t go out and get a GoPro in order to simulate Grand Theft Auto themselves, but they can still enjoy these wacky Londoners doing just that.
