One modder has recreated the classic Spider-Man pointing meme in Grand Theft Auto V using different universe versions of Grand Theft Auto’s silent protagonist Claude. The silent criminal with an unknown background originally made his first appearance in Rockstar Games’ first groundbreaking sandbox Grand Theft Auto III as the title’s main protagonistWhile separate universes, he is often believed to be the same chaotic evil character Claude Speed from the 2D universe that had little to no moral conscience of his actions and can be seen in Grand Theft Auto III having similar morals. The character did not return in GTA‘s HD universe in later installments but appears in Grand Theft Auto Online‘s character creation as a parent character model.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The famous “Pointing Spider-Man” meme has been around for more than a decade, with the earliest known use of the two characters dressed as Spider-Man pointing at each other from 2011. The image used in the meme however is much older and comes from the web-crawlers very first cartoon series where Spider-Man confronts an imposter that’s framing him after robbing an art museum. Though popularized earlier in the decade, the meme continues to be frequently on social media and is referenced in several other comics, movies, and video games. Developer Epic Games recently joined in on the fun by adding a “Pointing Spider-Man” emote to Fortnite, allowing players to reenact the popular meme.

Posted on Twitter by NotDoctorMike, the modder shared a recreation of the classic Spider-Man pointing meme in Grand Theft Auto V. In the screenshot, each version of Claude from the 2D, 3D, and HD universes can be seen pointing at each other at what looks like the escape cutscene from the beginning of Grand Theft Auto III. While Claude’s 3D universe model from the PS2 era is recognized, it appears that the other two models used for the comical parody were custom created by the modder himself, as the character doesn’t make an additional appearance in the HD universe.

Similarly, It appears that this isn’t the modders’ first work of art to show his appreciation to the Grand Theft Auto series. Following Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition‘s disastrous launch with many players mocking its visual style, NotDoctorMike created new character mods for Claude Speed and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City‘s Tommy Vercetti. These new character models allow both GTA protagonists to look more like their original counterparts, with face-lifts that are aimed at keeping faithful to both characters’ original designs.

Modding has played an important role in Grand Theft Auto‘s history and several parodies recreated by fans would become impossible without certain tools released by modders. As such, it wasn’t long before players replicated the viral return of one of the internet’s most widely shared memes in Rockstar’s latest Grand Theft Auto installment, and more are expected to pop up in the future.

Grand Theft Auto V is available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
