One Grand Theft Auto Online player exploring Los Santos has discovered a comical easter egg, calling back to Grand Theft Auto IV and a parody song that was popular during its era. Since its release, GTA V‘s online sandbox mode has evolved tremendously, receiving major updates and expansions to add new content and features, and to expand the title’s longevity. Its newest major expansion, The Contract, features the return of Franklin Clinton, Chop the Dog, and Lamar with the addition of new exclusive music from Dr. Dre, a new radio station, weapons, and quality of life updates, as well as new missions to give insight into the returning characters and the title’s lore.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As it stands, Grand Theft Auto IV is the highest-rated game in the series and is considered one of the greatest video games of all time. Despite some of its aspects not aging well, the title is known for taking the Grand Theft Auto franchise’s original formula and shifting it to a more realistic and detailed style and tone with a new game engine that introduced numerous never-before-seen mechanics. With the remastered versions of the original GTA trilogy recently releasing, speculation has now shifted toward the fourth title in the series, with a recent leak of a potential Grand Theft Auto IV remaster buzzing around online, hyping up fans who regard it as the series’ highlight and deserving of a proper touch-up.

Shared on Reddit, user Pricklydog posted an image of what appears to be a Grand Theft Auto IV easter egg discovered in Grand Theft Auto Online. In the image, a Grand Theft Auto IV screenshot of a boat can be seen on a calendar with the caption “IM ON A BOAT!.” This easter egg is a clear-cut reference to the popular song by The Lonely Island that went platinum in 2009 named “I’m On A Boat.” Coincidentally, the easter egg appears to be located on a cargo ship and looks similar to the one found in the song’s music video.

Throughout the history of the studio, Easter eggs have been integral to Rockstar games, and players can spend countless hours inspecting to find distinctive secrets pertaining to its universe, as well as strange breakthroughs or references to other games and movies that encourage players to keep exploring. These hidden features have played a role in keeping the GTA franchise memorable for almost two decades with cameos, secret messages, mythical creatures, and other very well-hidden references that have kept players coming back for more.

While Grand Theft Auto V is crammed with an abundance of easter eggs, it’s still nice to see a reference to one of the most beloved games in the series. It’s unknown if Rockstar is hinting at a future installment in the lucrative series or if the easter egg is old, but the recent discovery of Grand Theft Auto IV content within this title could be more valid than a coincidence.

Grand Theft Auto Online is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
