GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition Memes Mock New Graphics

November 11 marks the digital release of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, and players are already mocking the games’ graphics with viral memes. Rockstar Games announced the GTA Trilogy collection just a few weeks ago, and while many were excited for the remasters it seems that the enhanced graphics haven’t met fans’ expectations.

GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition is a remastered collection of three classic Grand Theft Auto games: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The oldest of the trio dates back to 2001, and with the games being remasters as opposed to remakes, players weren’t expecting new-gen graphics. However, the release of the collection has left many disappointed, especially when it comes to character models, which many believe to be poorly remastered. Fans have also been let down by the games’ music, with some classic songs removed from the GTA Trilogy.

Multiple GTA fans have been criticizing the games’ graphics on Reddit, sharing memes to highlight the differences between the original games and their remasters. User TheRentedElk06 compared the character models to the 3D Homer Simpson seen in The Simpsons: Hit & Run, released in 2003, while zlitter shared side-by-side screenshots of the new and original games, captioning their post: “dEfiNiTiVe eDiTiOn.” Cruysberghs shared comparison shots from GTA: San Andreas, and Novatonavila’s meme post states: “Time really harmed rockstar games…” While some are impressed with the backgrounds and world improvements, countless other Redditors have called out the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition‘s character designs while also noting the AAA price tag.

The controversy over the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition‘s graphics is worsened by the fact that Rockstar Games began to delist the original games from digital storefronts last month. This means that original versions of the games are now harder to get hold of, something Rockstar has likely done to promote sales of the new collection. GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition is now the easiest way to experience the classic titles, with the original character designs not as well preserved as they could be. Those who haven’t played the originals could struggle to easily access the classics, and may have the new poorly-received GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition graphics as their only option when it comes to playing the games.

Despite what many perceive to disappointing GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition graphics, the collection will likely sell well for Rockstar. It’s been a long time since a new GTA game has launched, and while rumors of GTA 6 persist, Rockstar has yet to confirm any details on the sequel. GTA 5 continues to be one of the best-selling games of all time, and those who’ve never before played earlier games in the series will likely be picking up the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition to catch up. The release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition also marks the first Nintendo Switch release of a GTA game, which is likely to widen the pool of sales.

GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is available digitally on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Physical editions will launch on December 7.
