GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition Steam Release Suggested By Database Leak

A new Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition leak suggests the collection of games will be released on Steam and will not be limited to the Rockstar Games Launcher on PC after all. The long-rumored GTA trilogy remasters were announced earlier in October, with Rockstar Games promising overhauls of the classic open-world sandbox games GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas in one package on most modern platforms. No gameplay footage or screenshots have been shown yet, but the remaster is set to feature new graphical and gameplay changes while staying true to the originals.

The studio prepared for the release of the GTA trilogy remasters by removing all existing versions of the three games from Steam and other digital stores, where they will be replaced by the Definitive Edition collection at launch. This was an unpopular decision made even more so by the announcement of the remasters’ exclusivity to the Rockstar Games Launcher on PC. Fans and game preservationists have rallied against the decision to restrict the GTA trilogy to the Rockstar Launcher for PC customers. There was an online push encouraging interested players to purchase the original versions of the classic GTA games on Steam before they were permanently delisted, and these versions are no longer available to purchase or view on all digital storefronts where they were sold officially at the time of writing.

According to data spotted by popular Rockstar Games insider Tez2, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition could also release Steam, meaning it may not be perpetually exclusive to the Rockstar Launcher on PC. Posted on GTAForums and later to Twitter, Tez2 pointed out server-side files and associated Steam IDs for each GTA remaster have been documented on SteamDB. While this is a possible sign the remasters may be making their way to Steam, there is no indication when they might be available or if they’re guaranteed to release at all.

Rockstar Games has remained vague about GTA: The Trilogy ahead of a probable October 22 reveal, but a stream of leaks since its announcement have shed some light on the collection. Gathered around the same time the Steam leak sprung, GTA: The Trilogy’s PC system requirements were allegedly revealed by leaker alloc8or. Other leaked information purports Rockstar will issue a $10 discount to players who purchase the remaster through the Rockstar Launcher, meaning the developer could potentially be planning to release the GTA remasters on Steam in a similar manner to its PC launch of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition continues to baffle some with its apparent exclusivity to the Rockstar Launcher on PC. While little is known as to whether or not that could change before or after release, more details can be looked forward to in the coming days, as more information is predicted to be announced around Grand Theft Auto 3‘s 20th anniversary on October 22.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2021, and it will launch on iOS and Android in H1 2022.
