A modder has turned the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition‘s versions of Tommy Vercetti and Claude Speed into their original counterparts by altering the characters’ in-game models to look more faithful to the classics. Problems regarding the GTA trilogy remaster across all platforms seem to be growing every day, as displeased fans have taken to social media to scorn its visual style, bugs, and lack of polish that make Rockstar’s remastered collection a disappointment to many. Despite Rockstar Games announcing that the Definitive Edition would be updated and improved over time, modders have stepped in to rectify its numerous ongoing issues and promised improvements.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two Interactive revealed the long-rumored GTA remaster trilogy in October, announcing the three PS2-era sandbox games – Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – with updated graphics and other improvements. Fan upset began upon the maligned remaster’s first full trailer, with users taking to social media to criticize the Definitive Edition‘s new art style and visual representation for looking too cartoonish and not reflecting realism. Unfortunately, negative impressions regarding the collection’s visual choice weren’t fallacious, as the release of the game proved that the smooth PS2-esque visual style made with the RenderWare Engine did not translate well when upscaled and altered for high-resolution in Unreal Engine 4.

Posted on Twitter by NotDoctorMike, the modder shared their new character mods for Grand Theft Auto 3‘s Claude Speed and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City‘s Tommy Vercetti. The visual modifications allow both protagonists to look more like their original counterparts, with face-lifts that are aimed at keeping faithful to both characters’ original designs. Interested PC players can quickly download both enhanced models on NexusMods and easily install them, as it only requires a quick drag-and-drop into the remastered collection’s corresponding game folder.

While a vast majority of modders have taken measurements to ensure that the GTA remastered trilogy is up to shape, some of them continue to mock the Definitive Edition with their creations. One recent modder turned the GTA trilogy remasters’ controversial rain effect into an obscured rain filter mod for DOOM. The ridiculed rain effect continues to plague the collection and developer Grove Street Games has yet to fix the issues that have caused numerous fans to stop playing entirely.

Despite being a new release, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is quickly becoming one of the most controversial games of the year. With graphical glitches, disappointing performance, and out-of-place game world changes, many believe it to be the worst Rockstar release to date. The company had to temporarily remove the remastered collection from the Rockstar Launcher shortly after its launch due to the accidental addition of game files, and many fans have been demanding refunds. Based on the backlash, it will be interesting to see how the controversy over the GTA trilogy remaster impacts the announcement of other Rockstar Games remasters in the future, as this marks one of the first major disappointments in the company’s catalog.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition is now available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It will launch separately on iOS and Android in H1 2022.
