Early impressions of Rockstar’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition are looking unsightly, as fans on social media have accused the remastered collection of being coated versions of previous mobile ports and have pointed out numerous blunders. Although officially releasing on November 11th, extensive amounts of leaked gameplay footage of the GTA trilogy remaster have been making rounds on social media by streamers and players who have unlocked the titles due to subsequent regional differences. These early glimpses highlighted the collection’s graphical enhancements and modernized controls, showcasing new additions such as its next-gen visuals in various locations and extensive new gunplay mechanics that include a brand-new weapon wheel.

The long-rumored GTA remaster trilogy was announced in October in celebration of Grand Theft Auto 3‘s 20th anniversary and promised revamped versions of the three PS2-era sandbox games – Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – with graphical improvements and gameplay enhancements for modern platforms. Though information remained scant upon its announcement, a full first trailer later revealed the remastered titles would be launching with higher-resolution textures, increased draw distances, rebuilt lighting, and reworked gameplay that mirrored the latest entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. Some fans however showed distaste for the GTA trilogy remaster’s new visuals upon its reveal by poking fun at its new art style for appearing more cartoonish and not reflecting realism.

Overwhelmingly negative feedback from players looks to be just beginning, as fans have taken to social media to call out the GTA trilogy remaster for having paramount blunders and being coated versions of the previously detested mobile ports. While many pointed out the collection’s numerous graphical bugs, glitches, and topsy-turvy art style that seems unfit with the titles, some content creators have given in-depth details on why the remasters are simply unsuitable for their price. One Twitter content creator, Low Poly Depression, pointed out that individual game UI sounds were ultimately replaced with San Andreas‘ and that the only change in controls that were promised to be on par with Grand Theft Auto 5‘s was a change in UI lock-on that had been replaced with an Unreal Engine 4 asset. Additionally, the Definitive Edition is confirmed to be updated versions of Grove Street Games’ infamous mobile ports, the content creator proves this by pointing out how San Andreas’s gym mini-games kept the mobile port’s simplified touch screen controls that were later ported and integrated on the infamously broken PS3 version of the game.

This doesn’t come as a surprise, as fans previously voiced their concern over Grove Street Games’ development on the remastered collection. A recent batch of new official GTA trilogy remaster screenshots were criticized by fans for including an exceeding amount of mistakes and being left unpolished. Grove Street Games is known for having a bad track record of releasing broken ports and the verity that its first modern platform title is a remaster collection of the beloved PS2 classics continues to worry many in the GTA community.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is officially around the corner and early impressions appear to be generally negative. It is unknown whether the remaster collection will live up to its full potential or go down as another misfire by Grove Street Games but players don’t need to anticipate much longer, as the GTA trilogy remaster is set to launch in less than 24 hours.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on November 11, 2021, and it will launch on iOS and Android in H1 2022.
