The original Guardians of the Galaxy team could play a role in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The team known as Guardians 3000 were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar Agord re-assembling them at the end of the movie. Following Yondu’s funeral, Stakar brought Ravager members Aleta Agord (Michelle Yeoh), Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), and Martinex (Michael Rosenbaum) back together, as they were also reunited with Mainframe (Miley Cyrus) and Krugarr.

The Guardians 3000 team was featured in one of five post-credits scenes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had. Ever since audiences saw the great cast writer-director James Gunn assemble the team, there has been plenty of interest in seeing them again in the MCU. Whether it has come from the actors involved, Gunn, or Kevin Feige, it has appeared extremely likely that they would be brought back at some point. Although such a plan has yet to be revealed, Michael Rosenbaum believes this will happen.

While speaking to Comicbook, Rosenbaum discussed what the future could hold for Martinex and the other members of the Guardians 3000 team. He detailed the original pitch from Gunn about the role, with the director selling him on the idea that they’ll be in a post-credits scene and that “there’s a good chance you’re gonna come back.” He went on to explain that even if this is the plan, he doesn’t know the specifics of them.

I think his plan is for us to come back so I just don’t know how. I think that was the plan all along…you’re going to see these guys in the end credits. Why bring Stallone on alone just to be in such a small part? You kind of want to see what he does, I mean I don’t know how you wouldn’t.

Ever since the team’s appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s post-credits, it has been widely believed their returns will happen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After all, Gunn is the one responsible for the initial tease of the team getting back together, so it would be logical for him to give them larger roles in the next film. However, shortly after Comicbook shared this quote from Rosenbaum, Gunn clarified on Twitter this doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll return in the third Guardians film.

Gunn’s decision to dampen expectations of the Guardians 3000 team appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is somewhat surprising. He has been working on the third film for years and had a draft of the script done before he was fired and later rehired. If the Guardians 3000 team are going to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, then Gunn would likely know by now. That said, his clarification doesn’t mean they won’t be in the next film. Gunn could simply be trying to keep expectations in check just in case something changes or in an effort to preserve the ability to confirm their returns at a later point.

Even though Gunn is now re-attached to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he has not offered up many details about the film. Marvel Studios has yet to even confirm a release date for the film though, so there is no rush on delivering the information, especially as Gunn works on The Suicide Squad. Once Gunn and Marvel do begin to reveal what the plan for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is, hopefully roles for the Guardians 3000 team members will be among the announcements. If not, then perhaps a spinoff movie or Disney+ show could come instead to give them an MCU future.
