Production on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 officially began back in November 2021, and is expected to wrap up within the coming weeks. Gunn’s latest project has remained largely under wraps, with details surrounding the film currently few and far between as production looks to draw to a close. Recent set images offered fans their first look at both Klementieff and Bautista’s characters, Mantis and Drax, in full makeup and costume since the Guardian’s last appearance in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Despite remaining incredibly secretive about Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Gunn has offered a number of fun teases and updates on social media throughout production and now he has taken to Twitter to share a particular exciting achievement.

In a recent tweet, Gunn shared that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has now officially broken the world record for “the most makeup appliances created for a single production.” Gunn revealed that the world record was previously held by 2000’s The Grinch, which saw Jim Carrey star as its titular character. The director went on to congratulate the makeup team behind the film, thanking them for “keeping practical effects alive.” Check out Gunn’s tweet below.

Gunn has previously spoken about his preference for practical effects in movie making, not only with how his characters are created but also within his set pieces. A plethora of Guardians of the Galaxy characters are transformed using makeup and prosthetics, given that the films feature a variety of different characters from all over the galaxy. Gillan, who plays Nebula, recently took to social media to share a behind-the-scenes look at her full-face of prosthetics, marking the makeup team’s 170th application on the star.

It’s certainly exciting to see Guardians of the Galaxy 3 earn such an achievement, particularly when one considers the hours of hard work that will have gone into securing this record. Given that a large majority of the film’s characters appear thanks to the use of special effects, this update from Gunn does not unfortunately offer any more insight into what can be expected from the upcoming film, but many will delighted to hear that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will use a number of practical effects to bring its characters to life. For now, audiences still have a little while to go until this hard work is showcased on the big screen, however it is likely to be well worth the wait.
