Marvel comics writer Jim Starlin reacts to Will Poulter’s casting as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently in production, well ahead of its May 2023 release date. James Gunn has been reinstated in the director’s chair after being briefly fired in 2018, and he brings with him much of his original Guardians of the Galaxy cast, including those like Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but all signs point to an emotional conclusion to the Marvel trilogy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is also drumming up excitement because it will finally introduce Adam Warlock to the MCU. The cosmic-powered character was first teased in the various end-credits scenes for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and fans wondered ever since if he would eventually turn up in person. Gunn played coy on the matter for some time, but then Detroit star Poulter was officially cast as Warlock in October. Poulter has been careful not to reveal too much about his Guardians of the Galaxy role, including whether or not his Adam will be a villain.

Starlin helped create the Guardians of the Galaxy and one of the biggest Marvel villains ever, Thanos. He didn’t create Adam Warlock, but he did do much to expand upon the character. Therefore, fans have been wondering how he feels about Poulter’s casting. Speaking to THR recently, Starlin revealed he has a list of Poulter’s movies that he intends to watch in the coming months, since he isn’t yet familiar with his work. Still, Starlin is confident in Marvel’s casting decision, saying:

“I never pictured [Josh] Brolin as Thanos. I had a couple of other actors in mind. But now I can’t imagine anyone but Brolin playing Thanos. They’ve been good at casting the characters. This actor will probably turn out to be just as good as the others.”

It’s true that Marvel has a solid casting record, being able to transform unlikely stars into fully-formed heroes. Poulter has amassed an intriguing filmography over the years; most recently, he appeared in the Hulu miniseries Dopesick alongside Michael Keaton and Rosario Dawson. Adam Warlock is a big Marvel role, but Poulter already seems suited to the part. He recently debuted a new hairstyle that falls in line with Adam’s typical comics look, which has further increased fan excitement for his debut.

Starlin has seen a good number of his comics creations make their way to the big screen, from Thanos to Gamora. Most recently, he finally got the chance to celebrate Pip the Troll’s introduction to the MCU in Eternals, something he’s long waited for. Adam isn’t entirely his, but there’s no question that the character’s onscreen transformation will be inspired by Starlin’s work. Starlin might not know much about Poulter, but he’s willing to trust Marvel on this. It’s safe to say fans will do the same thing as they wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to finally arrive.
