A skilled tech expert has just compared the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Square Enix and Eidos-Montréal’s sci-fi superhero adventure earned high praise from fans and critics alike for blending the rock-fueled antics of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies with a well-written story – all of which allows players to shape the ongoing narrative as Peter “Star-Lord” Quill leads his lovable band of outlaws on a quest to save the Marvel Universe from a multitude of interplanetary threats.

The technical execution of Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy has been a recent topic of discussion, seeing as developer Eidos-Montréal used the Dawn Engine from Deus Ex: Mankind Divided instead of the Foundation game engine that built 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers. A Steam listing for Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy noted that the game takes up about 150 GB of storage space on PC, but Eidos-Montréal later confirmed that such a large GotG file wouldn’t be the case. Meanwhile, some console players are wondering just how well Marvel’s newest gaming adventure runs on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

According to Eurogamer, Thomas Morgan of Digital Foundry recently compared the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy to see how well the game performs under both consoles’ various graphical settings. In a new video on the Digital Foundry YouTube channel, Morgan notes that both versions of Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy are visually impressive – save for a few technical issues – and feature an identical assortment of graphics settings. The 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, 60 FPS Performance Mode and 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, 30 FPS Quality Mode perform about the same on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. However, Morgan states that the former mode’s framerate often drops to the low 50s and even high 40s during combat or other graphically intensive moments. Furthermore, the Xbox Series S lacks the higher framerate modes of its beefier console counterpart and occasionally suffers from LOD pop-in.

Digital Foundry has weighed in on video game graphics before, such as the team’s analysis of the technical improvements in Halo Infinite’s multiplayer beta test back in August or comparison of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 and PC before that game’s infamously divisive launch last November. The talented minds at Digital Foundry also carry out interesting gaming experiments like running Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on old CRT box monitors or theorizing if the often-rumored but still unannounced Nintendo Switch can truly pull off 4K DLSS graphics as many have speculated.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy is a visual spectacle on any system, as evidenced by how close the game runs on both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. However, Digital Foundry did make a note that the game faltered somewhat on the Xbox Series S, meaning that players who really want to push Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy to its limits with 60 FPS might require a beefier console.
