The movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have always had a sense of humor, going back to 2008’s Iron Man, but the franchise’s installments didn’t become full-blown comedies until James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy turned a sadistic raccoon and a talking tree into two of the world’s most popular characters with an overtly comedic, self-aware tone.

Now, pretty much every movie Marvel releases is a full-on comedy — but the Guardians are still the MCU’s funniest characters. And starting with Avengers: Infinity War, the team has left their solo franchise behind and brought their unique comic sensibility to the larger universe.

10 Standing In A Circle (Guardians Of The Galaxy)

Star-Lord initially brings the Guardians of the Galaxy together with the promise of a huge payout for the Power Stone but eventually inspires them to step up and become heroes when Ronan uses that very stone to threaten Xandar.

He stands up and the rest of the Guardians eventually join him in the circle. Rocket is the last holdout and when he finally joins the group, he says, “Happy? We’re all standing now. Bunch of jackasses, standing in a circle.”

9 “Why Is Gamora?” (Avengers: Infinity War)

During the second act of Avengers: Infinity War, the Guardians head to Titan to launch a surprise attack against Thanos while Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange are doing the exact same thing. When both groups arrive, they each assume the other is working for the Mad Titan.

Quill asks, “Where is Gamora?” A confused Tony Stark says, “I’ll do you one better: who is Gamora?” Then, Drax adds, “I’ll do you one better: why is Gamora?”

8 Groot’s Attempts To Retrieve Yondu’s Fin (Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2)

When the Ravagers lock Yondu and Rocket in a holding cell, they keep Groot outside the cell as a novelty. After the Ravagers all go to sleep, Groot finds Yondu and Rocket’s cell and they tell him they’ll be able to escape if he grabs Yondu’s new prototype fin.

However, this turns out to be easier said than done. Groot doesn’t know what a fin is, so he keeps bringing back the wrong items, like a prosthetic eye and a desk.

7 “Nothing Goes Over My Head.” (Guardians Of The Galaxy)

When Star-Lord gets sick of Drax missing the point of his hypothetical language, Rocket explains, “His people are entirely literal. Metaphors go right over his head.”

And even that goes over Drax’s head, as he takes it literally and says, “Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast. I would catch it.”

6 Star-Lord Impersonates Thor (Avengers: Infinity War)

When Thor regains consciousness on the Guardians’ ship, he tells them he needs to get to Nidavellir and asks to take one of their pods. Star-Lord refuses to let him take one and tries to stand up to him.

However, since the God of Thunder is a lot taller, buffer, and more intimidating than him, Star-Lord feels the need to impersonate him. He pushes his shoulders out and deepens his voice, and when Thor calls him out, he pretends that Thor is the one impersonating him.

5 “I’m Mary Poppins, Y’all!” (Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2)

During the final battle on Ego’s planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Yondu floats down to the ground using his Yaka Arrow. Star-Lord mentions that holding the arrow above his head to fly makes him look like Mary Poppins.

Since Yondu has never heard of Mary Poppins, he asks, “Is he cool?” Quill replies, “Hell yeah, he’s cool,” and Yondu proudly exclaims, “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!”

4 Star-Lord Drops The Orb (Guardians Of The Galaxy)

The first Guardians movie gets a lot of laughs out of subverting the usual expectations of superhero blockbusters. The movie’s MacGuffin — “The Orb,” better known as the Power Stone — gets plenty of comedic mileage out of this.

When Star-Lord holds up the Orb for the first time, both he and the camera build an intriguing mystique around it — and then he drops it on the floor.

3 Groot And The Detonator (Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2)

During the climactic battle in the second Guardians movie, the team determines that the only way to destroy Ego’s planet is to blow up the core. But the only one small enough to get to the core is Groot, who’s just a baby.

No matter how many times Rocket explains which button on the detonator he’s supposed to press and which one will kill him instantly, Groot keeps going for the instant kill button.

2 Thor Leaves Earth With The Guardians (Avengers: Endgame)

Much like fellow mega-finale The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Avengers: Endgame has a handful of different endings that fills the audience in on where all the characters ended up following the massive-scale final battle and Tony Stark’s funeral.

Thor decides to leave Earth with the Guardians, so he joins them on Quill’s ship and jokingly calls them “the Asgardians of the Galaxy.” Thor and Quill engage in a hysterically passive-aggressive back-and-forth about which one of them is truly the team’s leader.

1 Saving Xandar With A Dance-Off (Guardians Of The Galaxy)

The climactic sequence of the first Guardians movie sees Ronan’s ship crashing on Xandar and the titular team standing up to the Kree menace to prevent him from destroying the planet.

To buy some time while the other Guardians try to grab the Power Stone, Star-Lord engages a bewildered Ronan in a dance-off. Lee Pace’s deadpan reaction makes the scene.
