Production company StudioCanal is already at work developing a sequel to the forthcoming ensemble action-thriller Gunpowder Milkshake. The film centers on Karen Gillan’s hitwoman Sam who goes rogue when an innocent 8-year-old girl is put in the middle of a gang war she has unleashed during a high-stakes mission. To keep her safe, the hitwoman turns to her mother, Scarlet, a professional assassin who was forced to leave her daughter when she was young, and her former hitwoman sidekicks.

Gillan leads an ensemble cast that includes Chloe Coleman, Lena Headey, Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino, Paul Giamatti, and Ralph Ineson. Similar to Warner Bros.’ roster of titles this year, StudioCanal elected to take a different release path with the ongoing pandemic and sell the domestic rights to Netflix for a streaming release while retaining the international rights for theatrical debuts in other regions. With just a week left to go until the film arrives, it appears the studio has bigger plans in store for the property.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

This week marks the beginning of the Cannes Film Festival and StudioCanal’s celebration of its 30th anniversary. In honor of both occasions, the studio revealed (via The Hollywood Reporter) several upcoming projects in development for the near future, one of which being a sequel to Gunpowder Milkshake. However, no confirmation was given to who may be returning in front of or behind the camera for the follow-up.

Following the success of the John Wick series, many studios have sought to build a grounded action franchise with expansive enough worlds for future endeavors. Though reviews haven’t begun rolling out yet for the first film, the plot points towards a lived-in world full of room for expansion. From the time in which Headey’s Scarlet is not in her daughter’s life to her past working with her hitwoman sidekicks, there’s plenty of opportunities for future stories.

But, of course, Gillan’s Sam could very well survive the events of the first Gunpowder Milkshake and fight another day in a new story. Should the door be left open for her to return, it would create an intriguing new franchise opportunity for the Guardians of the Galaxy star, as well as for Netflix on top of its Chris Hemsworth-led Extraction universe. The future will become clearer for the potential series when the film arrives on Netflix next week.
