Half Baked: The 10 Most Hilarious Scenes From The Dave Chappelle Stoner Comedy

Stoner comedies are typically best understood by those who partake, and it can be hard for the clean-living to really get in on the laughs. Not so with the funnyman Dave Chappelle comedy classic Half-Baked. It’s one part stoner flick, educational awareness tool and fast-paced comedy all rolled into one.

It’s also one of the funniest dope comedies since the Cheech & Chong series. Here are ten of the most side-splitting and hilarious moments from this 1998 cult classic. Break out Billy Bong Thornton if so desired. Otherwise, read on and enjoy the laughs.

10 The Diabetic Horse

After the guys get high, it’s up to Kenny to do a snack run in preparation for the munchies to follow. Brian gives him a lengthy list of food items to pick up, which doesn’t seem particularly eventful to the rest of the group. While the rest of the guys relax at home, Kenny heads out to the store and comes out to see a policeman’s horse near the sidewalk.

Ever-helpful, Kenny decides to feed the horse a bunch of junk food that ends up causing it to fall over and drop dead. The nearby police officer rushes to the scene and informs Kenny that the horse was diabetic, which kicks off the entire ridiculous (and funny) plot.

9 The Lab Pickup

Thurgood is busy doing custodial duties at the lab he works when a scientist asks him to take an order form and make a pickup. Thurgood thinks nothing of it, but he gets the shock of his life when he drops off the order form and is handed a pound of marijuana in return.

After nearly losing it right there on the spot, Thurgood returns to the scientist and has trouble handing over the weed. Understandingly, the scientist gifts him with a handful, only for Thurgood to snag a few more when he’s not looking.

8 Trying Out The Super-Weed

The guys were used to smoking weed that came from Samson Simpson, the most notorious drug lord in the city. Thinking his weed was the best in town, they were soon shocked to discover that the medical laboratory had strains far more potent and concentrated than anything the street had to offer.

After hitting the pipe (Wesley Pipes, to be exact), the guys began coughing profusely, which was the first sign that something was up. Not long after, they began floating out of their window and over the city skyline in a hilarious nod to Richard Donner’s Superman.

7 The Cameos

Half-Baked was loaded with unexpected cameos in the middle act, and included everyone from Jon Stewart and Snoop Dogg, to Full House’s Bob Sagat and Willie Nelson. Each of the actors played a different kind of character, most of whom represented different kinds of smokers.

It was a hugely fun way to poke fun at weed smoker stereotypes by choosing well-known faces to portray them. Even Stephen Baldwin (the MaGyver Smoker) and Janeane Garofalo (I’m Only Creative When I Smoke Smoker) got in on the fun.

6 Scarface Quits

When the guys began selling the laboratory weed to the local community, they became an instant hit and the best-known dealers in town. It wasn’t long before their (multiple) phones were ringing off the hook. As they inched ever closer to their “fundraising” goal to bail Kenny out of jail, they realized they’d have to step up their game.

They all decided to quit their jobs, usually in the worst way possible. Scarface had the most hilarious moment when he finally had enough of his burger-flipping job and grabbed the counter mic, yelling “F*** you” at everyone except one odd-looking elderly gentlemen whom he gave a “You’re cool!” shout-out to.

5 Meeting Sir Smoke-A-Lot

Thurgood was star-struck when he made a delivery to the house of none other than Sir Smoke-A-Lot, the group’s favorite rapper. Smoke seemed to be living the life with pretty girls frolicking in the mansion’s indoor pool while he purchased a pound of Thurgood’s Swedish Chiba.

When Smoke invited Thurgood to hang out and toke up before leaving, he thought it was the best moment ever. Unfortunately, it soon turned into a hilarious nightmare when Smoke got high and started lamenting about his lawyer, his back problems, and his crisis of faith.

4 Rehab

The romance between Thurgood and Mary Jane was the polar opposite of the most popular romance movies in the cinema, but at least it was funny. When she found out that he was dealing and smoking weed, Mary Jane lost her temper and broke up with him. After all, Thurgood had been lying about his habit after swearing on a banana split that he was drug-free.

In an effort to win her back, Thurgood decided to go cold-turkey, which didn’t start off too well. His irritability caused him to flip out at his job, at which point he decided to go to a drug support group to talk about his marijuana addiction. That didn’t go very well when the rest of the addicts booed him off stage for confessing about marijuana use while they were all addicted to cocaine and other hard drugs.

3 Mr. Nice Guy Is Jamaican

After Scarface makes a delivery to Samson’s mansion, he realizes he’s been set up. Samson threatens violence until Scarface brings “Mr. Nice Guy” (their marijuana dealer moniker) to meet him. Scarface tells Samson that Mr. Nice Guy is Jamaican, for no other reason than because he always thought of him as a Jamaican.

As the only black guy in the group, Thurgood was forced to pretend to be Jamaican in order to keep up the façade. To compensate, he pulled out every Jamaican trope in the book, which clearly didn’t fool Samson.

2 The Break-In

With only 11 days to go before Kevin’s in-jail protector, Squirrel Master is let out, the guys decide to step up their dealing in order to raise enough bail money. If not, Kevin will be left to the mercy of Nasty Nate, and a fate far worse than death.

They decide to rob the medical laboratory over the weekend and steal as much weed as they can for one last push. It’s a blundering mess from the very start, but hits its laughing peak the moment Thurgood and Scarface (dressed in a Dead Presidents heist movie costume) bust into the lab’s marijuana storage room and experience the closest thing to heaven that they can imagine.

1 The Sting

After being arrested by a S.W.A.T. team following the botched lab robbery, Thurgood and the guys make a deal with the cops to wear a wire and get Samson to talk drugs so they can gather evidence and take him down. The entire operation goes to pot (no pun intended) when the guys light up in the sting van to calm their nerves.

The second-hand smoke causes the two cops in charge of the sting to get high and start laughing uncontrollably while Thurgood speaks the code word “abracadabra.” Left to fend for themselves in an outmatched fight, Brian tosses a pouch that contains the essence of Jerry Garcia, who promptly clobbers Samson in the head with his acoustic guitar.
