When John Carpenter’s Halloween released in 1978, the film created a horror icon. Michael Meyers, also known as The Shape, is more than just a serial killer; he is a shadow, an idea that embeds itself into the viewers mind. Throughout the original film he stalks in darkness, accompanied only by the viewer, who is complicit in his voyeurism. Its eerie, frightening, and utterly indelible. As a result, the film spawned a series with the unkillable Michael Meyers returning again and again to horrify his victims and delight audiences. The franchise, like many recent horror properties, has even transitioned into video games.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In recent years, icons of horror have been brought into the games either in the form of a cameo appearance or as the star of their very own game. The Xenomorph has been a gaming staple for decades, and its less fantastical peers have been gradually becoming gaming stars. Jason Voorhees and Leatherface both became playable characters in Mortal Kombat, and Jason even got his very own game in the form of Friday the 13th – a multiplayer focused slasher where a player takes on the role of Jason and hunts down other players. Like his fellow serial killers Michael Myers has too gradually gained status in the gaming world, though it has been slower

The very first game with Michael in it was 1983’s Halloween, an Atari adaptation of the film. In it, gamers controlled a nameless babysitter as she tries to run from Michael and save children. The player proceeds to the next level by either stabbing Michael or escorting five children to a safe room. Like the film, Michael cannot be killed, and stabbing him only temporally immobilizes him. As such, the game has no actual finale, only ending when the player dies or gives up. While the only official game ever based on the movies, players do not get to play as Michael in it. However, much like Leatherface and Jason, Michael has gotten to guest in other games and, in those, players get to play as him.

Every Game Where You Can Play as Michael Meyers

There are two big name titles where players can play as Michael: Call of Duty Ghosts and Dead By Daylight.Call of Duty Ghosts released a DLC called Onslaught and it allowed gamers to take on the role of The Shape and kill other players. Only unlockable on the map called Fog, players must call in a field order and hope they get Myers’. If they do, they will turn into Michael, who has increased health and a deadly quick ax, and get to murder all in their way. Dead By Daylight, on the other hand, is a popular slasher-themed multiplayer game and Myers is one of its stars. In the game, one player is the killer, and there are 21 possibilities of who that killer could be, one of which is Myers, while the other 4 players work together or alone to salvage supplies and try to survive.

While those are Myers’ biggest appearances as a playable character, they aren’t the only ones. Terrordrome: Rise of the Boogeyman is a fan-made fighter by Huracan Studio that takes characters across all of horror (films, literature, tv, games, etc) and makes them fight to death. In the game, players can pummel numerous characters, from Chucky to Candyman, as Michael Myers. Currently the studio is making a commercial follow up that is in early access on Steam. Myers hasn’t been confirmed for Terrordrome: Reign Of The Legends yet, but given the ever-growing roster it is likely.

Michael Myers has also been in a couple of very obscure titles, and both are worth mentioning. First, there is a fan game called Halloween. Made in the Unreal 4 engine, Halloween is free to download and play on PC. Players begin the game playing as a potential victim, attempting to flee from Myers, but, once they have seemingly escaped, players change roles and are tasked with hunting the victim down. Its a clever little title that captures the dual dynamic of the films. The other obscure mention is a browser game called Michael Myers Rampage. Released to promote the 2007 Rob Zombie remake, this game tasks players with stabbing doll-like characters over and over as they wobble about. It’s boring, janky, and more than a little weird, but its worth checking out for novelty purposes. As an overview, below is every game where Michael Myers is playable.

  • Call of Duty Ghosts
  • Dead By Daylight
  • Terrordome: Rise of the Boogeyman (Fan Made)
  • Halloween (Fan Made)
  • Michael Myers Rampage (Flash)

Michael Myers is iconic but he has yet to have a game worthy of his status. Sure, Dead By Daylight does him proud but he is only one of many playable characters. Perhaps, someday, Michael and Halloweenwill get their own proper gaming adaptation just like Jason and the Xenomorph. But, for now, fans can enjoy his strange, and ongoing, contributions to indie-gaming.
