A new first-look image from the Halo series gives a closer look at Pablo Schreiber’s Master Chief. Halo, which is adapted from the massively popular Xbox game franchise of the same name, is set to come to Paramount+ sometime in 2022. In addition to Schreiber, the show stars Natascha McElhone as Dr. Catherine Halsey, Yerin Ha as Kwan Ha, Charlie Murphy as Makee, Shabana Azmi as Admiral Margaret Parangosky, and Bokeem Woodbine as Soren-066.

The series, which is set in the 26th century, follows a group of soldiers fighting an alien menace known as the Covenant. A major figure in the fight is Master Chief, a super soldier also known as Spartan. He is the protagonist of the games and his signature green armor and helmet have become more or less synonymous with Halo itself.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

EW just released an exclusive first-look image at the live-action Master Chief in Halo. The image doesn’t show the character in action, but it does offer a close examination of every nook and cranny of his armor. The design is almost alarmingly similar to that of the games, bringing the character to life in a fully realistic manner. The background in the image is a sandy-looking terrain which may in fact be the show’s iteration of the Sandtrap map used in the multiplayer version of Halo 3. Check out the full-size image below:

It seems likely that Halo has taken the same approach to casting as The Mandalorian, hiring an experienced performer to play the character despite the fact that he will likely be masked the entire time. Schreiber has previously been featured in more face-forward roles in series like Netflix’s hit women’s prison series Orange is the New Black and Starz’s Neil Gaiman adaptation American Gods. The actor’s most recent encounter with the far reaches of outer space is when he played James Lovell in the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man in 2018.

The Halo series will need to put in a lot of work to satisfy fans of the games, who will have many expectations when it comes to how this iconic character is brought to life. Although it is telling an original story rather than adapting one of the arcs of the games, it needs to be careful to properly pay homage to the universe it takes place in. However, if Master Chief in action looks as accurate to the games as his armor does in the image, audiences will have nothing to worry about.
