Hannibal season 1 episode 5 added another serial killer to the show’s expanding roster in the form of the Angel Maker. While Anthony Hopkins’ performance in The Silence Of The Lambs made Hannibal Lector an icon, the NBC series somewhat redeemed the character following underwhelming movies like Red Dragon and 2007 prequel Hannibal Rising. Hannibal itself focused on the titular cannibal’s friendship with Will Graham before the latter eventually catches him, with the show mixing different elements from Thomas Harris’ novels.

Hannibal ran for three seasons but despite attracting mostly positive reviews for its excellent performances, it struggled in the ratings. The final scene between Will and Hannibal could act as an ending in itself, but fans would very much like to see it revived. Both the cast and showrunner Bryan Fuller have talked about the odds of season 4 or some kind of revival, but there’s currently no word on when it might come together. In the meantime, it was announced in January 2020 that an unrelated show called Clarice will following the character of Clarice Starling following the events of The Silence Of The Lambs as she pursues new serial killers.

Early episodes of Hannibal dealt with Will taking on various twisted serial killers with unique killing methods, which had a sizable impact on his psyche. Hannibal season 1 episode 5 “Coquilles” introduces new killer dubbed the Angel Maker, who cuts the skin off the backs of his victims to “transform” them into angels. The killer is really Elliot Buddish, a truck diver with a brain tumor that apparently lets him see the sins of his victims, which is represented through their heads burning in his visions.

The hunt for the Angel Maker in Hannibal season 1 episode 5 takes a backseat to Will’s growing unease with his work, which is causing him to sleepwalk. His boss Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) keeps pushing him regardless, with Hannibal – acting as Will’s therapist – using this to sow seeds of mistrust between Will and Jack. Unbeknownst to Jack, his wife Bella (Gina Torres) has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, which Hannibal can smell when they have dinner together. Bella goes to therapy sessions with Hannibal to talk over her impending death and why she won’t tell Jack.

In keeping with the show’s high tolerance for gore, Hannibal season 1 episode 5 finds the Angel Maker killing another ex-con before and castrating himself – off-camera – to prep himself to become an angel too. Talking to the killer’s wife, who explains how he withdrew emotionally as his cancer progressed, Jack starts to realize why Bella is so distant. Will and Jack eventually discover the Angel Maker’s body, who has hung himself like his victims. Will also has a vision of the dead killer approaching him and is even able to see what he looks like through his killer’s eyes, with his own skull burning. Curiously, the show never explains how the Angel Maker could sense his victims were evil. Hannibal season 1 episode 5 ends with Jack and Bella having an emotional conversation about her diagnosis, and later Will and Jack sitting in silence.
