Hannibal season 1 episode 7 “Sorbet” proved even the title character needs someone to talk to. Following Hannibal Rising, the franchise was looking pretty dead. This 2007 prequel focused on the origins of young Hannibal, played Gaspard Ulliel, and ended with the implication of further cannibalistic adventures, but the movie was a critical and commercial dud. Anthony Hopkins had also ruled out reprising the role again following 2002’s Red Dragon and audiences seemed to have grown weary of the character.

NBC’s Hannibal debuted in 2013 and changed all that. Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) was cast as the title character, with the show focusing on his evolving friendship with troubled FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). While Hannibal started as something of a crime procedural focusing on particularly grisly killings, it evolved into its own unique, surrealistic horror series. It soon became beloved by its “Fannibals” but despite the acclaim, it struggled in the ratings and was cancelled after three seasons.

Hannibal season 1 episode 7 “Sorbet” finds the title character in something of a melancholy mood. He has to deal with a nosy patient in the form of Franklyn (Dan Fogler, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), who saw Hannibal at the opera and wants to be personal friends. Hannibal is later upset when Will misses their scheduled appointment, though when he heads to Will’s classroom and sees him zoned out while staring at crime scene photos, he opts to help instead.

Hannibal season 1 episode 7 also introduces Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) as retired therapist Bedelia Du Maurier, who still sees Hannibal Lecter as her “patient.” It’s clear from their interactions something is off with their relationship, as she states she doesn’t really talk to Hannibal and that he wears a “very well-tailored person suit.” She does hit on a core issue with him though, which is loneliness, though he deflects and states he has many friends. The other major storyline of “Sorbet” focuses on Will and Jack chasing a new serial killer who harvests organs, but while Jack badly wants it to be the Chesapeake Ripper, Will deduces it isn’t.

The first victim is found in a room that looks remarkably similar to Room 237 from The Shining, and Will realizes the “killer” tried to save the victim, something the Ripper would never do. Hannibal season 1 episode 7 “Sorbet” ends with them catching the killer, who is a medical student. They interrupt him during another “surgery,” and Hannibal steps in to save the patient’s life. Will and Hannibal chat back at the latter’s home about the case before Will leaves, as he’s determined to focus on catching the Ripper, while Hannibal unveils a great feast for his assembled guests. What they don’t realize is the delicious meat all comes from various “rude” people the good doctor has been killing and prepping for the meal. Bon appetit.
