Hans Zimmer & Musicians Perform Dune Score Live In Incredible New Video

Hans Zimmer and a team of musicians perform their Oscar-nominated score from Dune in a spectacular live video. Dune, which came to theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on October 22, 2021, was adapted from the Frank Herbert novel of the same name. It stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, a young man whose destiny might shape the future of the desert planet Arrakis, which is in political turmoil. Even with its day-and-date streaming premiere, Dune was a success at the box office, landing at #13 on the domestic box office chart for the year, just behind Godzilla vs. Kong, Jungle Cruise, and Free Guy, all of which have also had sequels greenlit (Dune 2 is coming in 2023).

Dune is a massive, epic popcorn movie that will be the beginning of a brand new blockbuster franchise. This is the type of film that typically doesn’t receive a lot of Oscar attention, except when relegated to certain minor categories. However, not only has Dune been nominated for Best Picture at this year’s ceremony, it has swept the technical categories, being nominated for 9 other awards including Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay, Visual Effects, Sound, and – of course – Score.

On their official YouTube channel, Warner Bros. shared a breathtaking video of Zimmer and a group of talented musicians performing the Dune score. The performance is intercut with shots from the epic sci-fi film, but what is even more astounding is watching the music come to life before one’s eyes. One especially intriguing and magical element is watching the vocalist perform the disembodied chanting that dominates the soundtrack throughout the film. Check out the video below:

The video is rather dynamic, with even the seated musicians in the strings section putting their whole bodies into creating the proper sound. If this replicates anything close to the actual original sessions for the film, it explains why the score became so instantly well-respected. Zimmer has already had a long career of composing for films, including prominent titles like Gladiator and Inception, but this is one of his most idiosyncratic and powerful works in several years, at least since the last time he collaborated with director Denis Villeneuve on Blade Runner 2049.

Dune is certainly in contention for winning the industry’s biggest accolade for its music. Although it has hot competition including the scores for the Best Picture frontrunner The Power of the Dog and the widely beloved Encanto, there is a power to the music here that this video shows off to its full effect. However, whether or not it wins, the music will continue to develop and get more complex in Dune 2, which might give Zimmer another shot at the gold.
