Director Christopher Landon teases there might be some news about Happy Death Day 3 soon. Blumhouse puts its horror movie spin on the Groundhog Day concept in 2017 with the release of the first Happy Death Day film. The movie stars Jessica Rothe as Tree, a normal college student who suddenly begins living the same day over and over again after she’s murdered by a mysterious killer disguised as the school’s baby mascot. Happy Death Day proved to be a big hit, as it earned $125 million worldwide on a minuscule budget, and pushed Blumhouse and director Christopher Landon to make it a franchise.

The development of Happy Death Day 2U moved fast and had the sequel in theaters just two years after the original. It brought Landon back as the director, and Rothe led a cast that featured many of the characters in the previous installment. Happy Death Day 2U introduced more sci-fi elements as it put Tree back in a time loop scenario. While the movie received positive reviews, it was not as financially successful as the first. This left the future of the franchise in doubt and led Landon to confirm that Happy Death Day 3 was not in development. However, it appears that might have changed.

The Happy Death Day franchise has a passionate fanbase who want to see Tree’s adventures continue and they repeatedly ask Landon for any possible updates on what the future holds. The director responded to one such question on Twitter and provided a positive tease that Happy Death Day 3 could actually happen. He said that there might be some news in the distant future regarding Happy Death Day 3, but it is unclear when this potential announcement will actually come.

Even though Happy Death Day 3 isn’t officially announced, Landon has already set up the third installment of the franchise. Happy Death Day 2U included a post-credits scene that teased where the franchise will go next. Landon has also mentioned that Happy Death Day 3‘s story could take place well after the last two films since it doesn’t continue the trend of taking place on the same day. Since the director clearly has a plan in place for where the movie will go, it is now up to Blumhouse to greenlight it. Jason Blum has expressed interest in continuing the franchise, but now it is possible the ongoing discussions about a third film have finally progressed to a place where there is news worth sharing.

Landon doesn’t have any upcoming directorial efforts announced, so he theoretically has the time to make Happy Death Day 3 sooner than later. Since he suggests that news about the movie might still be far away, fans shouldn’t expect any major developments to come in the immediate future. It will also be fascinating to see if Landon uses a potential Happy Death Day 3 to connect the franchise to his recent film body-swapping horror/comedy Freaky. Regardless, this tease that the movie might happen after all should be enough to get fans of the franchise excited for what could come.
