The love between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy is undoubtedly a passionate one, but is that enough to keep their relationship alive? An uncomfortable moment between the two reveals how different Harley and Ivy actually are, which may spell doom for their romance.

For some time now, it’s been confirmed that the bond between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy is, indeed, true love. What began as a close friendship blossomed into something more once Harley had ended her relationship with the Joker for good. With Harley finally leaving Joker for good, she began a romance with Poison Ivy that was far more loving, supportive and stable than any relationship Harley had ever been in before. While there have been some ups and downs for the two, the story of Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn continues, with fans hoping that their end is hopefully a happy one.

Unfortunately, one small argument between the two may shine a light on the biggest differences between Ivy and Harley. In Harley Quinn #13 by Karl Kesel and Pete Woods, the titular hero of the story is looking to put some space between her and Gotham. After a run-in between Harley Quinn and the Bat-Family, the former is looking to do some sightseeing across the DC Universe and wants Poison Ivy to come along with her. Unfortunately for Quinn, Ivy has responsibilities in the city, namely her floral ‘babies.’ Harley isn’t willing to take ‘no’ for an answer and implores that they should be more spontaneous and just go wherever they want with little planning. But Ivy remains firm with Harley, saying she has roots in Gotham that even the notion of a city with more sunlight can’t easily sway her from.

While the two have gone on road trips before, this tiff between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy brings up a big difference between the two. Harley is a fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants kind of woman, guided by impulse and feeling. Ivy, on the other hand, is ruled by logic and order and isn’t the type to up and leave at the drop of a hat. While they certainly wouldn’t be the first couple to deal with different personality types, this moment does raise the question of what Harley and Ivy’s future looks like.

This isn’t to say that Ivy and Harley aren’t able to commit to one another. Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn’s relationship is quite loving and affectionate, but love requires compromise and sacrifice from every partner. This moment seems to suggest that both Harley and Ivy are too wrapped up in their own worldviews to meet one another halfway. Ivy needs to recognize that Harley is the type to flit about whenever she feels like it, and Harley must understand Ivy’s preference to settle in one location. Until the two figure out a way to resolve that issue, the love life of Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn may be a short one.
