DC Future State will breathe new life into a timeline brought to its knees by Dark Nights: Death Metal, but it seems this new future will continue to bring conflict. Fans of Harley Quinn are in for a treat regarding DC Future State: Harley Quinn, but new previews show a terrifying fate for the reformed Cupid of Crime as she’ll find herself within the grasp of one Dr. Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow.

Harley has clearly kept her charming disposition in this series, but she can’t talk (or fight) her way out of this one. Approaching her is a mob of mysterious men who appear to be on a mission to apprehend Harley. While she fights them off, with the odds looking in her favor, the visual is covered with text blocks, calling her by any and all aliases she has taken. It is clear that someone is trying to psychoanalyze Harley. Eventually, she is overtaken by the mob of mysterious men and awakens in the laboratory of one Dr. Jonathon Crane.

Quinn and Crane have had plenty of interactions throughout DC history, so it seems odd that he would greet Harley by stating “we met before in my previous life” rather than this one. Are we seeing a reformed Scarecrow? Probably not, considering he seems to be holding Harley against her will. It appears the fascist government known as the Magistrate has its hold on Crane. This may be why the mad scientist has her in captivity. While Crane may not be turning over a new leaf any time soon, it’s clear his intentions are anything but good.

Artist Simone Di Meo released sketches behind Scarecrow in Future State: Harley Quinn via Twitter in November. He seems to have kept his trademark DIY neutral look complete with a gas mask filter. However, the villain may not be the same one fans remember from previous appearances. With what DC is calling a new era of Harley Quinn, perhaps a new era of Jonathon Crane is on the horizon as well.

However, it has also been revealed that Scarecrow won’t be the only villain to star in DC Future State: Harley Quinn. Di Meo’s tweet also revealed a slick new look for the infamous mob boss known as Black Mask. Will Harley face up against two differing villains? Or is her capture by the Scarecrow just a small roadblock on the way to one of her biggest battles of all time. Fans of the villain known that the threat of Black Mask should not be overlooked. Though Harley Quinn seems to be in a sticky situation right now, it may be nothing compared to what lies ahead.
