Harrison Ford is absolutely right: the role of Indiana Jones should never be recast. However, that’s not to say another actor won’t still step into the role regardless. Ford has been playing the iconic adventuring archaeologist for over 40 years, with his fifth outing as the character currently scheduled to release in the summer of 2023. Ford has previously said he doesn’t want to be replaced as Indiana Jones, and he’s right: it’s unlikely anyone else could ever quite fill his fedora.

Still, Ford (and presumably Indy himself, too) will be almost 80 years old when Indiana Jones 5 finally releases, and the actor clearly can’t play the character forever. While Harrison Ford had the perfect response for those criticizing Indiana Jones 5‘s older Indy, the fact remains that the current incarnation of the character is reaching its natural end. There’s no indication that Jones will die in Indiana Jones 5, but whatever the character’s fate in the upcoming film, he certainly can’t live forever.

He might have played a few iconic characters over his impressive career, but Ford’s face is synonymous with Jones. The actor was right when he told USA Today: “Don’t you get it? I’m Indiana Jones. When I’m gone, he’s gone.” It may have been said as a tongue-in-cheek remark, but Ford voiced the feelings of countless Indiana Jones fans – the idea that the character will be recast is underwhelming. However, it may also be inevitable, given Hollywood’s propensity for reimagining successful franchises and willingness to commission projects based on pre-existing material.

While Indiana Jones 5 doesn’t need to kill Indy to end his story, the upcoming film would make a logical conclusion to the character’s arc. After all, five cinematic outings – and dozens of additional stories told in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles – have fleshed Dr. Jones’ character out suitably, and given Ford’s age, 2023 seems a sensible year to have the actor hang up his legendary hat. However, while it would probably be best to retire Indiana Jones after the fifth film, the franchise is far too popular and successful for Hollywood to leave well enough alone.

In an age of reboots, Multiverses, and alternate timelines, anything is possible, particularly when it comes to Hollywood cashing in on successful IPs. With Indiana Jonesrumored to involve time travel, it’s entirely possible that Hollywood has already worked out their narrative angle for recasting the role. This would allow the Indiana Jones franchise to (semi-)organically work in a recasting of the titular role, and possibly reset – or at least revisit – Indy’s timeline in new ways.

While no official plans for recasting or rebooting the Indiana Jones franchise have yet been announced, it seems incredibly likely that it will happen in the not-so-distant future. It’s almost impossible to imagine anyone plausibly filling Harrison Ford’s boots as the iconic adventurer, but with such a successful franchise, it seems equally impossible that Hollywood will ever truly let it die. Still, Ford simply can’t continue to play the role forever, so whether the character is kept alive for future generations using alternate timelines in Indiana Jones 5 or simply left to retire in peace, the ultimate winners will be Indiana Jones’ fans.
