Although Luna Lovegood wasn’t a part of the core group of wizarding world heroes that consisted of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, she was still a close friend to the golden trio and an essential part of the fight against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters.

Unsurprisingly, Luna became a pretty instantaneously fan-favorite character after her introduction, and her strangeness became her calling card. However, what aspects of Luna’s characters weren’t just strange, but were actually downright confusing and hard to understand? These are just a few things that don’t make any sense about Luna Lovegood.

10 Why Did She Become Quidditch Commentator?

Although this was a minor plot point in the books that was omitted from the film adaptations completely, at one point there is a vacancy for the Quidditch commentator at Hogwarts, and Luna briefly fills the position.

Unsurprisingly, her commentary is hard to follow and has almost nothing to do with Quidditch. So then, why did she even become commentator in the first place? Surely there were plenty of Hogwarts Quidditch fans willing to fill the spot?

9 Why Wasn’t She Injured When Her Mother Died?

Although the exact circumstances around Luna’s mother Pandora’s sudden death are still mysterious, what fans do know is that Pandora was doing some sort of magical experiment that went horribly wrong, and that Luna watched her mother die.

While it’s possible that somehow this spell only hurt the person who was casting it, if it was serious enough to kill Luna’s mom and Luna was right there, how did she avoid being harmed or injured by it in any way?

8 She Never Spread Info About Thestrals

It’s actually not that difficult to understand why Luna might not want to have to explain why she can see thestrals, however, given her penchant for spreading around secret and strange magical information, it’s interesting that no one in the school had seemingly ever heard of or mentioned a thestral prior to Harry suddenly being able to see them.

Luna isn’t afraid to seem a bit nutty, and given her affection for the animals, it’s surprising she hasn’t tried to share her love for them with other students.

7 Why Does Everyone Disbelieve What She Says?

Everyone seems to think that Luna is a bit off her rocker, and if they even bother listening to what she has to say, they usually write her off as just saying something else strange that has no basis in reality.

However, when it comes to things like thestrals or nargles, there seems to be observable proof that what she’s saying is real. So why doesn’t everyone actually know what she’s talking about or trust what she says?

6 Why Is She The Only One With Info About The Diadem?

When Harry, Hermione, and Ron are looking for any possible Horcruxes, they inquire as to whether or not there were any Rowena Ravenclaw-related artifacts that could have been used to house Voldemort’s soul fragments. Luna conveniently informs them about the lost diadem, which happens to be exactly what they need to look for.

But why was Luna the only one who was aware of the diadem? Surely this is information that any of the golden trio (especially Hermione) could have found in their research?

5 The Golden Trio Is Unaware She’s Been Taken Hostage

While Harry, Ron, and Hermione obviously don’t have a lot of contact with the outside world while they’re on the run and looking for Voldemort’s Horcruxes, it’s not as if they don’t have any insight into what’s going on in the wizarding world at large.

So then, it’s actually kind of odd that they are completely unaware that one of their good friends has been taken prisoner.

4 She’s Been Taken Hostage As A Threat To Her Father

Obviously Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters are not fans of any kind of resistance against them, however, taking Luna as a hostage to keep Xeno Lovegood under control is kind of a weird choice.

After all, he’s not really much of a prominent power in the wizarding world, most people think he’s just some old kook, so it actually seems like taking Luna prisoner would legitimize whatever Xenophilius had been saying about Voldemort in the first place.

3 She’s Unbothered By Torture

There’s no doubt that Luna is a pretty tough young girl, and she has faced a lot in her relatively short life. However, it’s a little hard to understand why she so easily withstands torture.

She is both mistreated by Dolores Umbridge and when she is held prisoner at Malfoy Manor, and she is repeatedly described as unbothered and almost bored by the abuse. Why exactly is that?

2 She Has A Lot Of Friends

Once people get past the fact that Luna does tend to live up to her nickname of “Loony,” it’s safe to say that she’s actually a pretty cool chick.

However, it’s not that typical for children or teenagers to get past the weird behavior of their peers to look more deeply into their personalities. It’s great that Luna has developed so many friendships, but it might not be entirely realistic.

1 But Is Perceived As A Loser

While the notion that so many people who are at an age where coolness means everything looked past Luna’s more off-putting behaviors to become her friend is a little hard to believe, what’s even weirder is that despite the fact that she demonstrably has many friends, she’s still treated as unpopular within the narrative.

Yes, some students seem to treat her badly, but for the most part she actually seems to be very well-liked, which is diametrically opposed to her stated character description.
