Anyone born between February 19 and March 20 is a Pisces. Pisces are represented by two fish, and is connected with the element of water. Slytherin, out of the four Hogwarts houses, is the house that is also associated with the element of water. Yet, not all Pisces traits match perfectly with members of Salazar Slytherin’s house.

Pisces are known for being empathetic and generous, which doesn’t exactly match up with how Slytherins are often perceived. Still, there are a few traits where Slytherins and Pisces are indistinguishable from one another. But what exactly are the similarities and differences between this sign and house?

10 Typical – Sad

Pisces are known for being a little sad, introspective, and melancholy. It may seem strange, but Slytherins are also a little bit sad. Consider Malfoy as he tries to fix the vanishing cabinet in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Think about both Scorpius and Albus in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Consider Severus Snape, particularly after he loses his one real friend as a student. There is certainly a history of Slytherin students being sad and melancholy, more so than in any other house at Hogwarts.

9 Not – Lacking Empathy

Looking for a shoulder to cry on? Slytherin house is not the place to go searching. Showing concern for others isn’t something Slytherins do, or at least something they wear on their sleeves. Even best friends Scorpius and Albus don’t do a great job of showing concern for one another, as Albus is a bit too blind and self centered to be very good at it.

And those best friends are perhaps the closest we get to seeing any Slytherin show compassion for another. Slytherins are loyal, no doubt, but it’s hard for them to talk about their emotions or show a weakness, which caring is sometimes perceived as.

8 Typical – Desire to Escape

Many Slytherins are both ambitious and misunderstood, which certainly, like Pisces, leads them to often want to escape.

Whether they want to leave school because they have an unfounded poor reputation, or they have greater dreams than they seem unable to access or complete in school, Slytherins are not drawn to staying in one place or trying to settle down. They can feel confined, constricted, and smothered more often than not.

7 Not – Wise

Every good Harry Potter fan knows that Ravenclaw is the house where the wisest students reside, so obviously the wise Pisces will also fall more easily into the house of bronze and blue than into that of green and silver.

While Slytherins may be ambitious, they lack the wisdom to ask for help or offer compassion and kindness where it might help them meet their goals. Slytherins may be smart, but wisdom is different. Slytherins are too focused on their goals to take the time that real wisdom requires.

6 Typical – Being a Martyr

Watching Malfoy after he is scratched by Buckbeak makes it clear that Slytherins, like Pisces, very much enjoy playing the martyr. They will milk any situation for sympathy and recognition. Slytherins may also feel misunderstood and that they don’t deserve their poor overall reputation.

They will try and get all the sympathy they can when they can, because they understand (all too well) how fickle reputation can be. They also have real martyrs in their history, just look at Leta Lestrange and how she sacrificed her life to save her loved ones.

5 Not – Aggressive

Pisces may be known for being gentle, but Slytherins are not. Slytherins speak their minds, fight hard (just see their quidditch playing style) and have a history with the dark arts. Slytherins are not gentle (even if kindness and gentleness are not a weakness).

They are harsh, sarcastic, and can often be very self centered (ambition can sometimes do that). Not all Slytherins are evil and cruel, but if anyone is looking for someone who is kind and mild, Slytherin is not the best house to go searching in.

4 Typical – Loyal

“Just and loyal,” is a reference to Hufflepuffs from the Sorting Hat, but Slytherins protect their own too. Consider Malfoy family loyalty, or the fact that Slytherin house doesn’t worry about its reputation among the other three houses because what they think of themselves is really the most important.

Slytherins protect their own. It’s like TheGodfather. “You never take sides against the family.” Slytherins believe it and they stick to it. It’s a different kind of loyalty than that of Hufflepuff house, but it definitely still counts.

3 Not – Suspicious

Pisces are overly trusting and they want to believe the best in everyone, but that does not apply to Slytherins. A house so often known only for its connections to the dark arts, Slytherin members have learned not to trust others, especially without doing their research first.

They know enough about the world to be suspicious, to take their time. Trust is something that Slytherins understand must be earned, and they make sure that those they accept have put in the work required.

2 Typical – Closed Off

Slytherin house has a long and complicated history with the dark arts and that has certainly played into the fact that many of its members are closed off.

Trust has to be earned and that means a Slytherin, like a Pisces, is likely to hold quite a few details close to the chest until it’s one hundred percent safe to reveal who or what they really are. Even friends (see Albus and Scorpius) don’t lay out all their dirty laundry for one another the moment they meet.

1 Not – Fearful

The ambitions of most Slytherins mean it’s impossible for them to be as fearful as many Pisces are seen to be. To accomplish everything they want, Slytherins need to have a certain amount of Gryffindor courage (even outside the house of red and gold).

A house that has been home to the Dark Lord can’t be home to many fearful students. It would be too hard to live out their school years in the shared common room otherwise.
