Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was the movie that kick-started the Boy Who Lived’s time on the big screen. Releasing in 2001, it was when fans got their first glimpse of iconic characters from J.K. Rowling’s brought to life. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson immediately shot to superstardom for their performances as Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, and it paved the way for the successes that were to follow.

Not every piece of information from the book could make it into the blockbuster, however, and some scenes ended up being deleted. We’ll now take a look at every omitted scene from the DVD and Blu-Ray editions of the movies, ranking them as we go along.

7 Extended Troll Scene

A mountain troll is allowed into Hogwarts by Quirinus Quirrell in the Sorcerer’s Stone. The Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, who is working on behalf of Lord Voldemort, does this in order to create a diversion. He then heads to the third-floor corridor in order to try and get past Fluffy the Three-Headed Dog and obtain the stone itself but he’s thwarted by Severus Snape, whose leg is bitten by Rubeus Hagrid’s monstrous pet in the process. Afterward, Harry, Ron, and Hermione all walk off together and become firm friends.

On the movie’s DVD and Blu-Ray, there’s a deleted scene where Harry, Ron, and Hermione all walk away from the scene of the troll’s attack. They have a brief conversation about how Hermione would never have been in trouble had it not been for their actions, but, ultimately, it serves no significant purpose.

6 Extended Snape’s Classroom Scene

When Harry sits down for his first Potions lesson, he has no idea what he’s in for. In the movie, Snape realizes that he’s not paying attention to his words and is merely writing them down instead. Angry at this, Snape then humiliates him in front of the entire class, much to the delight ofDraco Malfoy. It’s a scene where the late Alan Rickman’s character oozes darkness, and it immediately gives fans the impression that he’s not a man to be trifled with. We’re certainly glad there were no teachers like that at our school.

The deleted scene alters things up slightly. Harry gives Snape a cheeky answer, and the Potions Master goes right up to his face, informing him of what he’d get if he put a multitude of potions ingredients together. We would rank it higher, as Rickman’s acting is again just the best, but, because it doesn’t add anything new to the scene fans did actually get to see, we feel it can’t climb any more up the ladder.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

5 Petunia Cracking Eggs

On the Sorcerer’s Stone DVD and Blu-Ray, there’s a deleted scene that shows Aunt Petunia cracking eggs by the kitchen. Seems innocuous enough, right? However, she’s horrified when she then opens one and finds a letter inviting Harry to Hogwarts inside. When she looks up and out of the kitchen window, she then realizes there are hundreds of owls in her front garden, which makes her scream in terror.

It would have added comedic value to the blockbuster, but Warner Bros chose to cut it. Instead, fans get to enjoy the sights of the Dursleys being freaked out by the owls in a different way, such as them dropping hundreds of letters down the chimney and refusing to budge when Uncle Vernon tries to get rid of them. They should have just given Harry his right away, but the perseverance of the creatures shows they’re hellbent on achieving their goal.

4 Harry And Hagrid On The Train

Speaking of comedic value, we do wish there’d included the deleted scene of Harry and Rubeus Hagrid on the underground in London. The pair are sitting on the Central Line, talking about what the Boy Who Lived needs from his first trip to Diagon Alley. Commuters on the train are visibly started by Hagrid’s huge appearance, and we don’t blame them. If we saw a half-giant crammed onto the underground, we’d be rather surprised.

It would have been a good way to install some more humor into the movie, with the majority of gags more for young viewers rather than adults. Furthermore, it would have shown just how muggles react when they come across somebody who is different to them. Instead, the movie decided not to show Harry and Hagrid traveling to the Leaky Cauldron, merely them walking inside and proceeding to buy the former’s things for Hogwarts.

3 Dudley Posing For Pictures

Another deleted scene from the Sorcerer’s Stone shows Dudley Dursley trying on his school uniform for Smeltings, an all-boys school he’s set to attend after finishing primary school in the UK. Vernon and Petunia are both so proud of their boy, who walks around importantly dressed in a maroon outfit complete with a straw hat and stick. Harry asks if he’s going to be attending the school, but they instead reveal he’ll be going to a normal comprehensive. To make matters even worse, Petunia dyes old clothes of Dudley’s in order to fit the Boy Who Lived, who remarks they look like pieces of elephant skin.

It’s a scene that is straight out of the books, and it’s fun to see it play out in live-action. It would have added a bit more depth to Dudley’s character and also revealed what would have happened to Harry had he not gone to Hogwarts. He’d have likely been picked on for his shocking appearance, so it’s a good thing Hagrid came along to whisk him away.

2 Neville’s Leg-Locker

This is quite a lengthy deleted scene in comparison to all the others. Ron begs Hermione to let her copy from him during the upcoming school exams, but she breaks his heart by revealing they’ll be special quills bewitched to prevent such cheating from happening. Then, the pair and Harry are startled when Neville Longbottom comes bouncing into the Great Hall having been hit with the leg-locker curse by Draco Malfoy. Seamus Finnigan offers to perform a counter-curse and insists he’s up to the task despite setting fire to his eyebrows earlier on in the movie. Little does he know that he’s got a huge bald patch on the back of his head.

In the source material, Draco regularly picks on Neville. He only does so on a couple of occasions throughout the course of the eight movies, however, and this would have given fans a more accurate view of their relationship. In the source material, Hermione sets him free and they urge him to stand up for himself more often. He eventually does in the years that follow, and, consequently, becomes a student transformed.

1 Harry Thinking About The Mirror Of Erised

In the Sorcerer’s Stone movie, Albus Dumbledore surprises Harry when he finds him looking at the Mirror of Erised in the middle of the park. The Hogwarts headmaster tells the Gryffindor student that it doesn’t do well to dwell on the mirror, but his words are rather vague and don’t really carry much meaning. The biggest takeaway from the scene is that the item is going to be moved to a different location, and it later reappears towards the end of the movie when the Boy who Lived is battling Quirrell for the stone itself.

Yet, there’s a brilliant deleted scene that shows why the mirror is so dangerous. It’s Christmas Day, and the Weasleys are all celebrating together, but, Harry, deep in thought about seeing parents James and Lily again, chooses to sit by himself. There’s a sweet background track, and Ron warns Harry to leave the mirror alone, but he gives his friend an unconvincing answer. Daniel Radcliffe is superb in the sequence, and we feel it should have made it into the final cut of the movie.
