The Battle of Hogwarts was the most brutal event in the Harry Potter movie franchise, and it’s important to remember everyone who died during the fight. The infamous battle was the climax of a story told over the course of seven books (which was adapted through eight movies). Before Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort were able to have their final showdown, many lives had to be lost.

The Dark Lord’s second reign of terror led to the Second Wizarding War. The events featured throughout the first seven Harry Potter movies led up to the boiling point showcased in the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. As the tension between Voldemort and his opposers boiled over, the fight found its way to Hogwarts. The battle would go on to become the final conflict between the two sides and the end of the Second Wizarding War.

As Harry and his allies sought out the final Horcruxes, Voldemort sent all of his Death Eaters to attack Hogwarts. Those in the wizarding school, along with the second Dumbledore’s Army and members of the Order of the Phoenix prepared to defend the castle. The hard-fought battle eventually resulted in a victory for Harry and his allies, but many were killed in the process. Here are all of the key characters that were killed during Harry Potter‘s Battle of Hogwarts.

Deaths In Dumbledore’s Army And Their Allies During The Battle Of Hogwarts

Severus Snape: Voldemort met with Snape in the Shrieking Shack on the night of the Battle of Hogwarts. The Dark Lord thought Snape was the master of the Elder Wand so he used Nagini to kill him. Voldemort lifted Nagini’s cage over Snape so the snake could inject him with a venomous bite. As Snape was dying, he released a series of memories to Harry who later learned of Snape’s true allegiance. The death also set off Harry’s journey in destroying Voldemort once and for all.

Remus Lupin: Remus was one of the various members of the Order of the Phoenix to answer Neville’s call for assistance in the upcoming battle. He helped lead the Hogwarts’ forces against the Death Eaters on school grounds. Remus dueled Death Eater Antonin Dolohov and was killed during the early stages of the battle.

Nymphadora Tonks: The wife of Remus Lupin intended to stay out of the Battle of Hogwarts to instead care for their infant son. Tonks couldn’t stand by and let him fight alone so she arrived just in time to help defend against the Death Eaters. As she worried about the fate of Remus, she ended up being killed by her aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange.

Fred Weasley: Fred and his twin brother George returned with the rest of the Weasley family to fight for Hogwarts in the major battle. The twins were sent to defend the secret passages leading to the castle. As Death Eaters started to make their way in, Fred and his brother Percy fought side by side. Fred was sadly killed in an explosion outside of the Room of Requirement.

Colin Creevey: Colin was forced to leave Hogwarts after Snape and the Death Eaters took over as Muggle-borns were not allowed to attend. The young wizard returned to assist Dumbledore’s Army but was sent away by McGonagall for being too young. Colin must have ignored her warning since his body was found by Neville outside of the Great Hall.

Lavender Brown: Lavender was in her final year during the Battle of Hogwarts. She was a member of the second Dumbledore’s Army and was willing to fight against Voldemort and his Death Eaters. At one point during the fight, she fell off of a balcony and was then attacked by Fenrir Greyback. Hermione blasted Fenrir away but Lavender’s injuries were too severe.

Fallen Fifty: The Fallen Fifty was the name later given to the unknown people who died during the Battle of Hogwarts. Their bodies were placed in the Great Hall along with the names listed above and remembered as heroes in the efforts against Voldemort and his Death Eaters.

Scabior: After his time spent in Azkaban, Scabior became a Snatcher, a name for those who would catch Muggle-born wizards or anyone who didn’t support Lord Voldemort. Scabior led a group of Snatchers during the Battle of Hogwarts. When Voldemort destroyed the protection around the castle, Scabior and his army tried to cross through the Wooden Bridge. Neville cast a spell that caused the bridge to collapse and Scabior ultimately fell to his death with the other Snatchers.

Vincent Crabbe: Towards the end of his schooling, Crabbe became a Dark Wizard with the ability to cast deadly curses. While Voldemort’s supporters were seeking out Harry’s location during the battle, Crabbe, Goyle and Malfoy ran into the wizard in the Room of Requirement. Crabbe attempted to conjure a Fiendfyre to kill Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The curse backfired considering Crabbe never learned how to stop it so he was killed as the room was engulphed in flames.

Bellatrix Lestrange: Bellatrix escaped Azkaban during the mass breakout and became one of Voldemort’s most loyal followers. During her time as a Death Eater, she notably killed Sirius Black, Dobby, and Nymphadora Tonks. She stood by Voldemort’s side during the Battle of Hogwarts but proved to be no match for Molly Weasley. Bellatrix attempted to cast a Killing Curse on Ginny but missed the young witch. Mrs. Weasley took great offense and dueled with the skilled Death Eater. The motivated mother proved his strength and killed Bellatrix much to the shock of Voldemort.

Nagini: Prior to the Battle of Hogwarts, Nagini was placed in a Protective Magical Cage to keep her safe by her master, Lord Voldemort. He used the snake to kill Severus Snape during the tumultuous battle. When Harry was thought to be dead, Voldemort released Nagini from her cage. Since she was a Horcrux, she needed to be killed in order for Voldemort to be defeated. Neville stepped up yet again and beheaded the snake using Godric Gryffindor’s Sword.

Lord Voldemort: The Dark Lord thought he killed Harry once during the Battle of Hogwarts so he had no qualms in trying for a second time. When Harry revealed himself to be alive, the fight moved through the Great Hall. The two dueled as Harry revealed to Voldemort that Snape has always been loyal to Dumbledore. He also proved that Draco had been the master of the Elder Wand and by previously disarming his classmate, Harry was now the owner. As Voldemort cast a Killing Curse, it rebounded off of Harry and instead killed Tom Riddle as the Elder Wand refused to kill its master. With that, Harry Potter‘s Battle of Hogwarts – and the Second Wizarding War – came to an end.
