Although every single House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has its pluses and pitfalls, it seems fair to say that there is no Hogwarts House that is more revered and idolized than Gryffindor.

Founded by Godric Gryffindor at the inception of Hogwarts, Gryffindor House is home to the witches and wizards that are brave and chivalrous most of all. So, it comes as no surprise that many of the most famous and powerful magicians in the wizarding world come from Gryffindor. However, which memorable House Gryffindor alumni are actually the most powerful witches and wizards in House history?

10 Rubeus Hagrid

Hagrid is obviously no slouch when it comes to basic magical skills, and honestly, his talents with magical creatures make him considerably more powerful than he would be on his own.

However, the fact is that he’s still just a natural-born wizard who got a few years of a Hogwarts education before being unfairly and unceremoniously kicked out of school, which leaves him lagging behind most other iconic Gryffindors in terms of power.

9 Neville Longbottom

The fact that Neville could even be considered as one of the less powerful members of Gryffindor house is a testament to the insane skills of this squad. But the fact is, Neville really had to grow into his wizarding abilities.

Of course, he became one of the most powerful and legendary Gryffindors of all time, even destroying one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, but he was so far behind the average when it came to displaying his magic, his family started to suspect he may have been a squib.

8 Ron Weasley

Ron Weasley is a certified badass who could likely take on nearly every witch or wizard he faces off with, and he’s a key member of one of the most important trios in wizarding history.

However, he is probably the weakest member of the Golden Trio when it comes to power. His magical talent might be on par with Harry or Hermione, but his lack of fundamental knowledge leaves him trailing behind.

7 Arthur Weasley

Obviously all of that magical talent running through the veins of the Weasley children had to come from somewhere, and Arthur certainly has shown his magical mettle time and time again.

And although he’s not exactly a respected member of the Ministry of Magic, the very fact that he’s a government agent and has such a heavy influence over magic-muggle relationships gives him an element of power that many other characters don’t have.

6 Molly Weasley

Molly Weasley seems more than content devoting her life to being the best mom in the history of fiction, but that doesn’t mean that she isn’t capable of so much more.

While Bellatrix Lestrange’s power might not match someone like Dumbledore or Voldemort, she’s one of the most terrifying villains in Harry Potter history, so the fact that Molly felled her so easily really shows how powerful she is.

5 Minerva McGonagall

Although there are plenty of Gryffindors who are contemporary legends, it seems like Minerva McGonagall is a witch who is going to make it into the history books for quite a few reasons.

Not only is she an insanely powerful witch and a master of transfiguration, but the influence that she’s had over the wizarding world through her position at Hogwarts and specifically due to her relationship with Harry Potter and the Golden Trio is genuinely incalculable.

4 Godric Gryffindor

It says a lot about how many strong and powerful witches and wizards fit into Godric Gryffindor’s ideals that even the namesake of House Gryffindor isn’t the most powerful Gryffindor to ever live.

But still, Godric deserves his due. Not only was he one of the most powerful wizards of his era, but the creation of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry legitimately changed the face of the wizarding world forever.

3 Albus Dumbledore

Although Lord Voldemort sadly outlived him, the very fact that Dumbledore was the only person who ever intimidated Tom Riddle, and was the only wizard to stand up to both Voldemort and Grindelwald (the most dangerous dark wizards of the era), makes Dumbledore a true Gryffindor legend.

There is a bit of irony in Voldemort seemingly “defeating” Dumbledore by proxy though, because while the Dark Lord believed that he’d gotten Snape to kill one of his greatest enemies, Dumbledore is the one who guided Harry Potter into becoming the one boy who could defeat Voldemort.

2 Harry Potter

It’s entirely possible that Harry Potter will become the best known and most revered student in House Gryffindor’s history, because of course, he was the one to actually defeat Voldemort twice, first when he was a baby, and finally when he and Voldy faced off at the Battle of Hogwarts.

It’s hard to know what would have happened had Harry failed in his quest to defeat the Dark Lord, but it’s entirely possible that he literally saved the wizarding world.

1 Hermione Granger

It might not seem fair to rate Hermione’s power above Harry’s given that Harry defeated the most powerful dark wizard of all time.

However, Harry couldn’t have done any of it without Hermione’s help, and Hermione went on to become the Minister of Magic and basically revolutionized the wizarding world. With her magical talent, her intelligence, and her societal power, Hermione seems like the most powerful Gryffindor of all time.
