In the Harry Potter series, the trio consisting of Harry, Ron, and Hermione is absolutely central to the story. But, while Harry and Hermione get a lot of attention from fans because their contributions to the story are more obvious, Ron is often more underrated.

While Ron does have some more obvious personality flaws and overall weaknesses, he also has many strengths as an individual that make him an important member of the group. Here are the overall best and worst things about Ron Weasley.

10 Weakness: He was lazy and entitled

Ron grew up in a loving family where he was well taken care of by his parents. While he had many other siblings and they weren’t a rich family, the Weasleys loved their kids and provided delicious meals and many comforts. Because of this, Ron was the most used to being pampered of the trio members. He often expected Hermione to do his homework, and he even wanted her to cook the meals while on the run.

9 Strength: He knew a lot about the wizarding world

One of Ron’s biggest strengths that often helped the trio was his knowledge of the wizarding world. While Hermione might have been the smartest of the group who knew the most about magic and history, Ron knew things about the culture that the other two couldn’t know as they grew up in the Muggle world. The information Ron had about things like the Tale of Three Brothers was definitely useful.

8 Weakness: He got jealous way too easily

During the events of the series, the trio are pre-teens and then teens. Because of this, it makes sense that they weren’t always mature or emotionally intelligent. However, Ron was still prone to jealousy, and he was very immature in this way. He would get upset that Harry Got more attention than him, and he would lash out at Hermione when she showed any romantic interest in anyone else.

7 Strength: He cared a lot

One thing about Ron that often gets overlooked is that he did care a lot about his friends. Hermione was more intelligent about expressing her emotions, and Harry was a more emotionally driven person. However, Ron still did care a lot.

He might not have always had the maturity to express himself well, but he was there for his friends and tried to support them. There were many instances of Ron doing everything he could to do the right thing.

6 Weakness: He was often moody

All of the members of the trio could be moody from time to time, but Ron could be particularly swayed by his moods. He was easily upset by small things, especially when it came to Hermione, and if he was in a bad mood, he made sure the people around him knew it. While Ron could be a fun and relaxed person, he could easily get irritated and offended. He was also very sensitive at times.

5 Strength: His love for his family

Ron often had some complicated emotions surrounding his family, and this makes a lot of sense. He was the youngest son and had many older brothers he felt he needed to live up to, so it’s understandable he felt a lot of pressure. But, despite his own insecurities at times, he really did love his family. He cared a lot about them and wanted to protect them, and he was always defending their honor.

4 Weakness: He abandoned friends in their time of need

Given that Ron was a Gryffindor, most people assume that he is automatically going to be loyal. However, loyalty isn’t always a given. Of all the three memes of the trio, Ron was the one who wavered the most.

He didn’t support Harry when he was called as Hogwarts champion, and, even worse, he left both Harry and Hermione on the search for Horcruxes. While he did always come around, he was the one who let his own issues get the best of him.

3 Strength: He usually was loyal

However, while there are some valid criticisms to make of some of Ron’s actions, he was overall a very loyal person. He was a teenager who made some mistakes, but he did love his friends. He was there for Harry through many life-threatening moments, and it was only under the influence of the Slytherin locket that he really lost his cool. So, while he might have messed up, he wasn’t usually a dishonorable person.

2 Weakness: He didn’t see his own privilege

Probably one of the most frustrating things about Ron was that he couldn’t see the areas where he was privileged in the wizarding world. He was an overall compassionate person, and he devoted a lot of his life to fighting Voldemort and his followers. So, while he did care about equality in many ways, he couldn’t see his own prejudices. Having grown up in the wizarding world, he had some negative beliefs about werewolves, giants, and house-elves, and he never challenged them.

1 Strength: He faced his fears with bravery

Of all the Gryffindor house traits, bravery is one of the most important. Bravery doesn’t always look the same, however, and each person has their own fears. Ron was especially brave because he was always willing to face his own demons and fears to do the right thing. Whether it was going into the Forbidden Forest while following the spiders or facing the locket Horcrux, he was very brave.
