During the Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts reunion, the three big actors of the movie franchise revealed that they almost ruined Ron and Hermione’s first kiss. In a particularly notable point in the special, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson recounted their memories of filming the highly anticipated scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Though the moment had been long-awaited by fans, the actors admitted that the scene was one of the most challenging for them to film.

It has been twenty years since the first Harry Potter movie was released and to commemorate the occasion, the HBO Max reunion gave fans an intimate behind-the-scenes look into the beloved franchise. Led by Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Grint (Ron Weasley), and Watson (Hermione Granger), the Harry Potter actors that brought the characters from the books to life reconnected in a way viewers had never seen before. Some particularly interesting insight the actors gave was in regards to the kiss that Ron and Hermione shared in the final installment of the series.

The three protagonists of the Harry Potter movie series debuted their roles at a very young age, forging friendships as they navigated the entertainment industry together. Naturally, Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson considered each other siblings more than anything else as they worked on the films. Watson suggested that it was this sibling-like relationship that made it so difficult for her and Grint to get through the kissing scene and Radcliffe admitted during the Harry Potter reunion that he didn’t make it any easier for his fellow co-stars.

In the reunion special, Watson recounted how she was feeling during the shooting of the kissing scene. “It was meant to be like this dramatic makeout, but you [Rupert Grint] and I just kept corpsing, we just kept laughing. And I was just really scared we were never gonna get it because we just couldn’t take it seriously.” Having spent over ten years getting to know each other as friends and colleagues, Watson and Grint struggled to stay in character while filming this scene. At one point, Watson said she “just had to go for it,” knowing that Grint was most likely not going to make the first move.

Radcliffe didn’t make the already awkward situation any easier. Instead, he made it a point to watch Watson and Grint as they portrayed the intimate moment between their characters during the highly anticipated Deathly Hallows scene. “I did not make this better, because I’ve been told that I was just being an absolute dick about this, and was like, ‘I’m gonna come on set and watch you guys kiss!’” While many wanted to bear witness to the pivotal moment between Ron and Hermione as it unfolded, it appears that Radcliffe was just trying to give his long-time friends a hard time about it.

Fortunately, Watson and Grint managed to get the scene done and as they reminisced together during the Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts reunion, laughs were had by all. Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson continue to be household names and the reunion only further validates their tireless commitment to making sure they portrayed their characters in the most believable way possible. Despite the struggles they encountered while filming, the cast of the Harry Potter movies still holds a special place in the hearts of millions of fans.
