International pop star Harry Styles finally opens up about his cameo appearance in the end credits of Marvel Studios’ latest film, EternalsEternals is the studio’s penultimate theatrical release of 2021 and has quickly become one of the most divisive entries into the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe in its now 13-year run. The Chloé Zhao-directed film bucks many longstanding traditions of the franchise while also pushing the limits of what general moviegoers have come to expect from an MCU blockbuster. For instance, while most MCU entries try to tie in and engage with previous characters and storylines, Eternals is much more forward-facing and insular in terms of the scope of its story. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the film’s two post-credit sequences, one of which introduces Harry Styles’ character, Eros, into the MCU.

In Marvel Comics lore, Eros is an Eternal and the biological brother of the Mad Titan, Thanos. He is occasionally affiliated with the Avengers (first being inducted into the team in Avengers #232 from 1983), where he adopted the codename, “Starfox.” In Eternals, Eros makes his onscreen debut in the film’s first end-credit sequence, where Pip the Troll (Patton Oswalt) introduces Styles’ character to the remaining Eternals aboard the Domo. Styles has remained relatively tight-lipped about his involvement with Zhao’s film until now.

In a recent interview with Dazed, Styles finally broke his silence on his MCU introduction. He speaks highly of his brief time on set, saying that filming his cameo “was a great experience and I’m so grateful to have gotten to work with Chloé [Zhao].” Check out the actor’s complete statement below:

I’m only in right at the very end. But who didn’t grow up wanting to be a superhero, you know? It was a great experience and I’m so grateful to have gotten to work with Chloé.

Styles’ cameo leaked on social media last month ahead of the Eternals’ international premiere. Despite the cast and crew’s attempts to keep the scene under wraps, images of Styles in his Eternal costume began circulating online well before the film’s planned November 5th release date. For the lucky few that were able to experience Eternals for the first time without prior knowledge of the scene, the surprise inclusion of Eros proved to be one of the highlights of the nearly three-hour-long film.

Eros’ introduction into the MCU presents several exciting avenues for future films to explore. Given the character’s close connection with the Avengers in the comics, it’s highly likely that Styles may appear in a future Avengers film. On the other hand, given the comedic tone of the end-credits scene and Eros’ connection to the cosmic side of Marvel lore, he could just as easily appear in the next installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Given the spirited reactions to Styles’ appearance in Eternals, it would be wise for Marvel Studios to capitalize on the character as soon as possible.
