Marvel Studios has released the first trailer for Hawkeye, featuring an MCU first that will no doubt be its secret weapon: Lucky the Pizza Dog. In Marvel Comics, the loyal canine is one of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop’s greatest allies, and not only because he’s one of Marvel’s cutest animal companions ever. Lucky is actually capable during conflicts, and he’s also helped solve mysteries in past comics. That being said, should Lucky the Pizza Dog’s depiction track with the comics, it’s fairly likely that Lucky will be Hawkeye’s breakout star.

Created during Matt Fraction and David Aja’s 2012 run on Hawkeye, Lucky was originally (and ironically) named Arrow, belonging to the abusive Tracksuit Mafia. However, after he was rescued by Clint Barton, Hawkeye adopted him and renamed him Lucky, taking him to vet after the brave hound lost one of his eyes helping him fight the Mafia members in the process. However, he also gained the name Pizza Dog due to his love for all the pizza Clint would feed him. Not only that, but Pizza Dog has actually become a major help and asset to the archers in past comics, and he even got an entire issue that was written and drawn from his unique canine perspective, seeing Pizza Dog solving a murder all on his own (he even once helped take down Taskmaster as well).

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Now, the first official trailer for Marvel’s Hawkeye has confirmed appearances from Lucky the Pizza Dog himself but also a group holding Clint captive at one point looking very much like the Tracksuit Mafia. Combined with Lucky’s missing eye, perhaps Pizza Dog’s origins will follow the same path from the comics before Lucky was adopted by Hawkeye and Kate Bishop? Furthermore, this is the first time the MCU has featured a consistent dog companion, and it’s already pretty evident that Lucky will steal any and every scene he’ll be in.

While promo images and this new trailer have implied that Lucky will be primarily Kate’s dog in the MCU series, it should be noted that the Pizza Dog in the comics split his time between the two archers when Kate moved to LA to form the West Coast Avengers. As result, even with the archers’ tumultuous schedules and lives as superheroes, there’s always been someone to look after Lucky, and he’s always been there to look after one or both of them.

With the quasi-exception of Nick Fury’s pet cat/flerken Goose in Captain Marvel, the MCU hasn’t really had any kind of normal animal companion, and the fact that its first will be Lucky is exciting since he’s one of Marvel’s best. Pizza Dog will be able to play off both Clint and Kate while also being as helpful as he is cute, offering heartwarming and comedic scenes in equal measure. As such, MCU fans better be prepared to have a new favorite Marvel character when Marvel’s Hawkeye releases its first episode on November 24th.
