A new Mission: Impossible 7 image has officially debuted on social media, showing Hayley Atwell teaming up with series veteran Tom Cruise for yet another impossible mission. The seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible series is currently set to debut in theaters next year. In addition to Cruise and Atwell, the Mission: Impossible 7 cast will include Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Cary Elwes, and Pom Klementieff, among many other new and returning cast members.

At this stage, very little is known about Mission: Impossible 7’s plot. The film has been in production since fall 2020, with numerous Covid-19 delays causing issues for the sequel’s production. These delays even resulted in Tom Cruise’s now-infamous on-set rant against people violating Covid protocols, which became a meme unto itself last winter. However, despite some delays and hiccups through the shoot, Mission: Impossible 7 now appears on-target for its May 2022 release date.

It’s reasonable to assume that fans may see more of Mission: Impossible 7 in the coming months. Some actors, such as Rebecca Ferguson, have already wrapped on the film, and some wild stunt footage recently debuted at CinemaCon to the delight of Cruise fans everywhere. Though very little is actually known about Atwell’s character in the film, her presence alongside Cruise in numerous set pieces seems to indicate a potential partnership between the characters, suggesting that she’s part of Ethan Hunt’s ever-growing team of IMF agents in the film.

Throughout the series’ run, one thing that has remained consistent about the Mission: Impossible franchise is the regular effort to pair Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt up with equally talented female leads. Whether it’s Thandiwe Newton as the sly cat burglar Naya Hall in Mission: Impossible 2, or Rebecca Ferguson’s morally ambiguous Ilsa Faust in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Hunt always seems to have a capable woman by his side. Now audiences will just have to wait and see if Atwell’s character can match the skill and efficiency of the femme fatales who preceded her. Mission: Impossible 7 will hit theaters on May 27, 2022.
