As a child, the fashion guru from HBO Max’s Stylish struggled with the rare genetic disorder that is also referred to as Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome, Bloch-Siemens incontinentia pigment, or Pigmented dermatosis Siemens-Bloch type, according to the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias. Females with IP may experience abnormal appearances in their hair, skin, nails, eyes, and teeth. Complications within the central nervous system also affect females born with IP. Males conceived with IP are miscarried and do not survive. Although, if a mother does not pass on the abnormal X-chromosome to her unborn male, he is born unaffected.

Lyons has a mild form of IP and has experienced skin discoloration. Doctors often determine that a child is born with incontinentia pigmenti from the early appearance of progressive rashes that do not disappear with treatment. As females with IP develop, they may experience fewer teeth, wide spacing between teeth, cone-shaped teeth, and other symptoms. As a child, Lyons suffered from bald spots and missing teeth. The designer underwent dental surgery and openly admits to wearing dentures

IP does not occur in a particular ethnic or racial group. The rare disorder is often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. There is no known cure for IP at this time. Lyons does not allow the disorder to keep her from achieving her goals as a designer and entrepreneur. The star of HBO Max’s Stylish credits her childhood experience with IP as the source of her success as a fashion designer. Lyons states that she felt isolated from the world of fashion and wanted to make clothes that were for everyone
