For the past four seasons protagonist Issa Dee (star, Issa Rae) and her best friend, Molly Carter (Yvonne Orji) have strived and struggled to navigate Los Angeles professionally and personally, sometimes with success and oft times experiencing abject failure–but always together. Even their ride-or-die relationship though has had its up and downs.

The Insecure creator has racked up a slew of award wins and nominations since the series’ 2016 an for good reason. The stories are relatable and don’t wrap up nicely in a bow at the end of each episode, plus the array of characters are well-drawn unpacking the contemporary black female experience for all of us to understand and learn from.

12 Issa Dee: Cancer

This water sign feels things deeply, is imaginative, emotional, and can be moody as well as…insecure. The moonchild is guided by the heart and has a hard time with the realities of the world.

Self-talking in front of the mirror is Issa’s therapy. For several seasons, the 30-year-old worked as a Youth Liaison for a non-profit but has moved into the entrepreneurial world by starting her own event planning firm. She’s had a number of close-but-no-cigar romantic relationships, especially with Lawrence who she got back with thinking happiness was hers, only to find out he’s having a baby with another woman. Luckily, she has her friends.

11 Molly Carter: Aries

This fire sign is determined, confident, and passionate as well as impatient, moody, and aggressive. This sign is as competitive as all get out as well as impulsive and often vents anger without first thinking things through.

Molly is a tough-as-nails attorney and Issa’s BFF. But the confidence she exudes in her professional life does not transfer into her personal life where she suffers from low self-esteem and fear of abandonment. She searches for love in all the wrong places and when she finally finds a good man in Andrew, she finds a way to sabotage it by always believing she’s being criticized or mistreated.

10 Lawrence Walker: Libra

This air sign is cooperative, gracious, and social, but prefers to avoid confrontation at all costs and gets into self-pity. For him, partnership is important.

Lawrence (Jay Ellis) has been Issa’s on-again, off-again boyfriend since the get-go. When we met him, he was underachieving and unmotivated, which caused Issa to cheat on him, with a break-up chaser. He then gets his mojo back and gets involved with Issa’s successful colleague, but eventually returns to his first love, only to confess to Issa that his former girlfriend is having his child.

9 Kelli: Aquarius

This air sign is nothing but original and independent, and a bit temperamental. An Aquarius enjoys fun with friends, helping others, and good conversation. They can see both sides of a problem and can easily solve problems. For them, the world is full of possibilities.

Hurricane Kelli (Natasha Rothwell) gives new meaning to the word big personality. The financial advisor is the member of Issa’s core group who never fails to speak her mind often for comic relief. She is always up for an argument or to get her flirt on; shamelessly portraying herself to prospects as someone else–such as a British transplant. Managed to remain neutral in the Issa-Molly situation.

8 Tiffany Dubois: Taurus

This earth sign is reliable and devoted, but also stubborn and uncompromising. A Taurus feels the need to always be surrounded by love and beauty and turns to the material world for fulfillment. Their world view is founded on money and wealth.

Tiffany (Amanda Seales) is the fourth friend in Issa’s squad and ostensibly the one they all aspire to be. The bougiest of the bunch has an adoring husband and baby, which she likes to flaunt. This Type A fancies herself Beyonce-esque and has cultivated other-women friendships with those more like her. But it’s her true friends and husband Derek who rescue her from her post-partum depression.

7 Derek Dubois: Capricorn

This earth sign is responsible, self-controlled, as well as serious, and always expects the worst. Capricorns believe in family, tradition, and prefers understated status.

Derek (Wade Allain-Marcus) is the devoted husband of the rather snobby and image-conscious Tiffany. He’s as mild-mannered as Tiffany is ostentation. The weaker member of this power couple seems to love his wife more than she loves him. If fact, no one would be surprised to find out Tiffany has stepped out on her man. He’d forgive and take her back because he believes he’s lucky she’s with him.

6 Nathan Campbell: Gemini

This air signs gentle, affectionate, and likes to exchange ideas, but is also nervous, inconsistent, and indecisive. Geminis represent two different personalities and one never knows which will appear.

Handsome Lyft passenger and barber, Nathan (Kendrick Sampson), is an LA transplant from Texas who only starts to warm up to his new surroundings when he sees it through the eyes of So-Cal native Issa. They start out strong and he helps her step out of her comfort zone, but eventually ghosts her, later explaining he is struggling with being bipolar.

5 Andrew Tan: Pisces

This water sign is compassionate, artistic, intuitive, and wise, but can be overly trusting and can play the victim. There’s a spirituality thing going on and a Pisces dislikes cruelty of any kind.

Andrew (Alexander Hodge) was Molly’s boyfriend who she met at Coachella. Laidback and cool, he wants to help Molly learn to relax and communicate her feelings. She never tells him that she and Issa are on the outs so he’s genuinely confused when she screams at him for using his entertainment connections to help her former friend with her block party. He can’t take it anymore and breaks things off with the lawyer.

4 Condola Hayes: Scorpio

This water sign is resourceful, brave, and loves being right. Scorpions are assertive leaders and known for their calm and cool demeanor.

Condola (Christina Elmore) is beautiful, smart, and successful–as well as out for number one. Yes, she helps Issa bring her block party dream to life but then moves into friend territory usurping Molly’s place as BFF. Then she starts dating Lawrence. As she’s been burned before in a relationship, she’s not ready to get serious with Lawrence but tells him she’s going to keep the baby they’re having, despite the fact that he’s gotten back with Issa.

3 Frieda: Virgo

The earth sign is loyal, kind, hardworking but can be shy and overly critical of themselves as well as others. Virgos have a deep sense of humanity and are very caring.

As the Director of Student Outreach at We Got Y’all, Issa’s former place of employment, Frieda (Lisa Joyce) is well-meaning yet lots of what comes out of her mouth comes out wrong. Despite her sweetness and the fact that she looks almost childlike, she thinks she can give Issa “how to be black” lessons because Frieda is co-dependent with the POC kids in the program and understands their struggle.

2 Daniel  King: Leo

This fire sign is as creative and generous as it is arrogant and self-centered. Leos like being admired, fun with friends, and wanted to be treated like royalty. These born leaders dominant a situation, are attractive and successful.

Daniel (Y’lan Noel) is Issa’s high school and college friend with the movie star swagger. In fact, he’s the one whom she cheats on Lawrence with during his Best Buy period. The music producer was more than happy to swoop in when Issa needed a couch to sleep on when she became financially strapped but alas was never a serious contender, more of a friend with benefits.

1 Chad: Sagittarius

This fire sign is generous, idealistic, patient, and makes good on promises. But a Sag will say anything no matter how undiplomatic. This sign is optimistic and enthusiastic and turns words into actions.

Chad (Neil Brown Jr.) is the quintessential good guy. Larence’s well-off friend is unflinchingly honest and gave his pal a place to crash when he split with Issa. He’s reliable, gives sound advice, and is loyal to his fiancee Leah. It’s hard for him to watch his pal “a good guy” go bad thanks to being cheated on by Issa.
