Netflix unveils the first trailer for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and reveals a September premiere date for the CG series revival. The series was announced to be in late 2019 alongside fellow Netflix project Masters of the Universe: Revelation from Kevin Smith, a sequel series to the original 1983 series. The CG show, however, was confirmed to be aimed towards younger audiences in comparison to Smith’s adult-oriented show.

The new He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will act as a revival of the original series as Eternia, the first planet of creation, comes under attack by the demonic tyrant known as Skeletor who is on a rampage to capture the ancient fortress known as Castle Grayskull. As young Prince Adam and his friends come into possession of enchanted Power Weapons, including the iconic Power Sword, they are transformed into the Masters of the Primal Powers of the Universe. The group must use their powers to stop Skeletor and restore peace in Eternia and Castle Grayskull.

Nearly a month after debuting the first part of Smith’s separate series, Netflix has debuted the first trailer for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. When it was first announced that Netflix was working on two tonally different Masters of the Universe series, many fans were left uncertain about what to expect from each project. Though the streamer’s revival of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power proved to be a hit with critics and audiences alike, the lack of connections between the three projects in terms of universe or creative talent had many leaning towards excitement for Smith’s series but hesitation for the CG revival. While Masters of the Universe: Revelation would become another win with reviewers, it would also see fans review-bomb the series for its shift towards focusing on supporting characters rather than Prince Adam himself.

The first trailer for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will certainly please fans to see the titular hero seemingly return to the center of the story, though for those uninterested in a retread of the original story may find a lack of interest in the series. However, the self-aware humor on display in the trailer and the intricate CG animation could prove enticing enough to draw in longtime fans of the franchise and newcomers to the series. Only time will tell when He-Man and the Masters of the Universe arrives on Netflix on September 16.
