Alice Oseman has released the first photo of the full cast of Heartstopper, the upcoming Netflix adaptation of her YA graphic novel. Heartstopper first started as a webcomic back in 2016 as a spin-off of Oseman’s debut novel, Solitaire. It centers around the blossoming romantic relationship between British teenagers Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, who appear as characters in Solitaire, as they navigate life, love, and friendship whilst dealing with issues such as coming out and Charlie’s mental illness. Heartstopper continues to be updated online three times a month and has been published in three physical volumes, with a fourth volume set to be released on May 13, 2021.

Eight episodes of a Heartstopper live-action adaptation were commissioned by Netflix in January 2021, with Oseman writing the script and See-Saw Films producing. The series will also be directed by Euros Lyn, who is best known for his work on Sherlock and Doctor Who. An expansive open-casting audition process took place that saw over 10,000 people take part. Now, Oseman has officially revealed the main cast of Heartstopper on Twitter, praising their talent and introducing two characters that are new for the television series. The cast is led by Kit Connor and Joe Locke, who will play Nick and Charlie respectively. The news has been met with excitement from fans, who have praised the cast’s likeness to their graphic novel counterparts. Though there’s no word on when Heartstopper will release just yet, it’s safe to say that the live-action adaptation of the popular YA webcomic is in very good hands.
