Hell’s Kitchen has made its return to Fox, and the twist this season is Young Guns. Gordon Ramsay, the richest chef in the world, is dealing with a new generation of aspiring chefs. For the first time, each contestant competing in this season is under 24 years old. “Tell me any 21 year old in America who doesn’t wanna spend 3 ½ months in Vegas and get their a** kicked by me?” Chef Ramsay said.

Like any other season, contestants compete in traditional Hell’s Kitchen challenges like cooking signature dishes, recreating Chef Ramsay’s recipes, and identifying ingredients while blindfolded. The teams are divided into red versus blue or females versus males. The red team’s sous chef is season 10 winner Christina Wilson, the current executive chef position at Gordon Ramsay Steak in Las Vegas. Meanwhile the blue team is led by season 7 runner-up Jason Santos, who currently owns four restaurants: Buttermilk & Bourbon, Citrus & Salt, Abby Lane and B&B Fish.

Because the entire cast is split into two, an entire team gets to celebrate when a competitor receives the best critiques while the others must endure punishment. For the first time, this season, two punishments are given out instead of one. As of season 18, some chefs are given a punishment pass which allows them to partake in the winning team’s reward. While some punishments are rather mundane, like cleaning the kitchen or having to prepare food for Chef Ramsay’s dinner service, others are much more intolerable like eating unappetizing leftover foods or sorting through the trash. So far, the men’s team has had to handle deliveries for food stock while the women were treated to dinner at Gordon Ramsay Steak 2.0.

Though they may be young, these millennials are no stranger to the kitchen. “I don’t wanna sound super cocky but there is a new generation coming and we’re taking charge,” Victoria, a 21-year-old junior sous chef told the cameras. Each week the competition gets more intense and each week someone is sent home by the lead chef himself. So far viewers have said goodbye to 24-year-old Matthew the food vlogger and Ava, a 22-year-old meal prep chef whose signature dish is Ava Flava’s Orange Chicken. Head chefs, line cooks and executive chefs are among the many left vying for the win.

The winner will walk away with the grand title of the Hell’s Kitchen winner and become the new Head Chef at Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Las Vegas. They will also receive a grand prize of $250k. A series of youngins like this season’s competitors may have not participated in the past but in the words of 21-year-old sous chef Morgana, “My age doesn’t matter, my food should.”
