One fan has fixed Superman actor Henry Cavill’s lip CGI in Justice League using deepfake technology. Justice League is one of the more controversial movies made in recent years, as director Zack Snyder left the movie before it was complete. Joss Whedon then came on to complete the project, but significant changes were made to Snyder’s original story. This led fans to dub his version of the movie the Snyder Cut. Snyder has only increased speculation about that version of Justice League by confirming its existence and releasing photos of deleted moments from the film.

Whedon’s new vision for the movie required reshoots. This caused a problem for Cavill, who was already working on Mission: Impossible – Fallout at the time, for which he grew a mustache. After some back and forth between Warner Bros. and Paramount, WB ultimately decided to digitally remove Cavill’s mustache for the Justice League reshoots. The resulting look led to ridicule from fans and critics alike. Some even blamed the mustache disaster for Justice League‘s poor box office performance, though many other factors also played a role.

Now, YouTube user Jarkan has created a deepfake of the opening scene of Justice League, which features Cavill’s Superman. In the video, Cavill’s lip certainly looks a little more normal, especially when compared side-by-side with the original version. Check out the Justice League deepfake video below:

Justice League remains in the conversation even now, over two years after its release, thanks to the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement. Many DCEU stars have been supportive, such as Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck. However, Cavill hasn’t had as strong of a reaction to it. Late last year, the actor revealed he hadn’t seen the Snyder Cut and couldn’t even speak to its existence. This is in opposition to Aquaman star Jason Momoa, who’s claimed to have actually seen Snyder’s version of Justice League. Unfortunately, regardless of whatever support the Snyder Cut has received from those in the DCEU, a decision about releasing the Cut will likely have to come from Warner Bros.

Deepfake videos like this one featuring Cavill have become increasingly popular in recent years. This is due to both advanced technology and creative fans coming up with ways to alter their favorite movies and TV shows. MCU star Tom Holland is a popular target for deepfake videos, with fans inserting him into Back to the Future footage or replacing him with fellow Spider-Man Tobey Maguire in the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer. This scene of Cavill in Justice League is interesting and effective in that it doesn’t make a humorous change, but rather fixes something that’s bugged many fans for years.
