‘Hercules’ Set & Cast Photo Round-Up Featuring Dwayne Johnson, John Hurt & Joseph Fiennes

2013 has seen White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen join the ever-growing list of dueling Hollywood movies with virtually identical plots, and it seems as though next year’s pair of contenders will be Renny Harlin’s Hercules 3D, in which Twilight star Kellan Lutz will play the demigod hero, and Brett Ratner’s Hercules, in which Dwayne Johnson will star as a slightly older Hercules in a story that takes place “after the labors, and after the legend…“

Ratner’s film is an adaptation of Steve Moore and Admira Wijaya’s graphic novel “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” and began filming earlier this year in preparation for a summer 2014 release. Throughout the production Johnson has been uploading set photos of himself in costume, complete with long flowing locks and tweeting them to his 5.6 million plus followers of Twitter.

Johnson’s most recent tweets include images of his co-stars Joseph Fiennes and John Hurt in costume and an atmospheric view of the film’s many extras getting ready for a battle. Now that filming is getting ready to draw to a close, however, we’ve rounded up all the images from the set of Hercules that Dwayne Johnson has shared so far, including an inside look at his hair and make-up process and a photo of Norwegian actor Aksel Hennie, who plays Tydeus, doing some impressive push ups.

The film takes place some time after the most famous legends of Hercules, when the hero has become a travelling warrior who sells his services (and the use of his formidable reputation) for gold. He is called to shed the mercenary life and become a true hero once more when the King of Thrace (Hurt) seeks his help to defeat a savage warlord. In one of the images above, Johnson can be seen silhouetted wearing the head of a lion as a helmet, and you can also see what this looks like from the front in another photo showing the wall of the make-up trailer.

While most people seem to be pretty happy with the choice of Johnson, who has some decent acting chops to go with his Herculean stature, as the protagonist of this film, having Ratner behind the camera has led to some mixed responses. The screenplay was written by newcomer Ryan Condal and Evan Spiliotopoulos, the pen behind many direct-to-video Disney sequels such as The Jungle Book 2, Cinderella III: A Twist in Time and Tarzan 2.
