Two new gameplay features for The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles were shown off at Capcom‘s E3 presentation. The first is Dance of Deduction, where Herlock and Ryunosuke make deductions and necessary corrections, respectively. The second is the Summation Examination, in which Ryunosuke finds the contradictions in the statements of the jury. Both of these features will be making their debut in the series.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a pair of prequel titles to the classic Ace Attorney franchise. It follows Ryunosuke Naruhodo, the ancestor of Phoenix Wright, as he travels to Great Britain to study law. He is accompanied by Susato Mikotoba as his judicial assistant. While in England, Ryunosuke also teams up with legendary detective Herlock Sholmes and faces prosecutor Barok von Zieks.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The new trailer posted to the Ace Attorney YouTube page goes over two new gameplay features. (Warning for blood and story spoilers in the video.) In Dance of Deduction, Herlock makes a wild claim about a situation after taking in the scene. While he’s typically on the right track, it’s up to Ryunosuke to correct his assumption after further examination. The two then present the correct solution in the most over-dramatic way possible, as is fitting for the series.

The second new feature is called Summation Examination. The jury will offer their thoughts on why they believe Ryunosuke’s client to be guilty. Ryunosuke is then tasked to find the two contradictions in the jury’s statements. If Ryunosuke is correct, he may end up changing the jury’s mind, thus securing a “not guilty” verdict. The trailer also shows off the literal scales of justice. When a jury member declares the client innocent, more fire is added to the white side. It is, again, just as strange and overblown as the rest of the game, which only adds to the charm.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is more than just the long-awaited localization of Phoenix Wright’s predecessor. It’s also the next logical evolution for the franchise, adding new gameplay to enhance the already solid formula. Dance of Deduction and Summation Examination fit perfectly as expansions of the cross-examination mechanic the series is known for. They also mesh well thematically, given Herlock’s faulty logic and the inclusion of juries for the first time. It’s possible that these gameplay elements will make their way to Ace Attorney 7 in the future if said title is ever announced. For now, the courtroom is proving to be livelier than ever, even in the early 19th century.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles launches on July 27 for Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
