HGTV Renovation Island: Learn About The South Andros Island Location

HGTV has partnered with Bryan and Sarah Baeumler to film HGTV’s Renovation Island. The Baeumlers are risking everything with this reality TV adventure, and their four kids are along for the ride. Bryan and Sarah must renovate an entire vacation beach resort on South Andros Island. Cameras document their journey.

South Andros Island is part of the Andros Islands. This cluster of islands is 100 miles long and 40 miles wide, so it’s the 5th-largest island group in the Caribbean. The Bauemlers are an HGTV reality TV family that took a big gamble by saying goodbye to their home in Canada. They decided to renovate a hotel that had been abandoned for over 10 years. Their dream was to make it into a world-class resort which includes 10 acres of oceanfront property.

South Andros Island is a remote location which is home to nearly 2,000 people. The area is filled with natural beauty, including white-sand beaches. The area is tropical, with plenty of warm sunshine. According to The List, the Baeumler’s learned a lot about the island during the renovation stay, with the first lesson being: “stay flexible”. Only two ships a week bring materials to this island, so sometimes things don’t arrive on schedule (or get left out of an order). The family has to adjust and often fishes to grab some quick grub. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas, decimating many locations, but fortunately for Bryan and Sarah, the South Andros Island was mostly spared. Unfortunately, the storm did impact many of their employees who lived nearby. At that point, the Baeumlers created a Go Fund Me account to help with hurricane relief. The goal was $10,000. The fund started by these reality TV celebrities ended up raising over $180,000!!!

The new Caerula Mar Club was scheduled to open in May 2019, then got pushed back to November 2019, eventually opening in February 2020. The resort received high marks from various travel magazines, including Condé Nast Traveler and TheRobb Report, where it was listed as one of the top twelve best hotels to visit while in the Caribbean. The resort has 18 high-end hotel rooms, 22 oceanfront villas, and a slew of amenities.

Environmental preservation was a top priority for the Baeumler’s and Bryan told Travel Weekly how they focused on this issue throughout the entire renovation process. In fact, they allied with Reef Rescue Network’ this non-profit works to restore and rehabilitate coral reefs in The Bahamas.

After learning about all the natural beauty that South Andros has to offer, it’s no wonder people are flocking to this resort to get a chance to stay in a tropical paradise.
