A humorous glitch has been discovered in Baldur’s Gate 3, which ensures that NPCs are always watching, even when walking away. Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently in Early Access and it likely won’t launch until 2022, so there are lots of bugs and glitches that are still being ironed out by the developers.

Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios previously worked on the Divinity series, with Divinity: Original Sin 2 being a complex and massive game. The large network of potential player choices in any given situation in Divinity: Original Sin 2 led to the game shipping with a number of bugs, which had to be dealt with through post-launch patches. It seems Baldur’s Gate 3 will go through a similar process, as it looks to be even bigger than Divinity: Original Sin 2. The Early Access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 only covers the first of three planned Acts, and the one in the game is already massive, with a number of different approaches to problems, so the final version of the game is likely going to take a long time to finish and have plenty of material for repeated playthroughs.

Larian has been improving Baldur’s Gate 3 based on fan feedback, but there’s one glitch that might have to stay in, as lots of people are enjoying it. The glitch causes an NPC to lock eyes with the player and maintain contact, even when walking away, causing their body to literally bend over backward to keep their eyes on the player character. A video on the Jibun Fade YouTube channel shows the glitch in action.

What makes the glitch even more amusing is that it happens after a character tells the protagonist to be more careful, as the group she represents won’t always be watching. The character in question is Korilla Hearthflame, a servant of the devil Raphael, who saves the protagonist from imprisonment. Korrilla tells the protagonist that she won’t always be watching, immediately before contorting into a form that’s straight out of The Exorcist and keeping her face trained directly on the person she’s talking to.

It’s clear that Baldur’s Gate 3 still needs a lot of work before it’s ready to be shipped, which is why the Early Access period and fan feedback are so important to the project. The quality of pre-release content can achieve memetic status in the community, as was the case with Craig The Brute from Halo Infinite. Craig’s unpolished appearance in a gameplay preview turned him into a meme which was even recognized by Microsoft and 343 Industries. Baldur’s Gate 3 still has a long way to go before launch, but it would be funny if Larian included a reference to this glitch in the final version of the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently in development for Google Stadia, macOS, and PC.
