Even though it is not officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the new animated series Hit-Monkey is still an extraordinary offering from the creative minds at the studio. What’s more, it’s a brutal, violent, yet funny series focusing on the titular monkey as he sets out on a quest for vengeance against those that killed his tribe.

Though he is the main character, there are many others that enter his story as he pursues his quest, all of whom display varying levels of intelligence and smarts.

9 Yuki

Even though most of the characters that appear in Hit-Monkey are either human or simian, Yuki is neither, as she is a guardian spirit whose purpose is to protect Tokyo from chaos and destruction.

Though she initially tries to do away with Hit-Monkey, she ultimately has the insight to realize that he is something more than just an agent of death and destruction and that, in fact, he might be a powerful force for good in the city that she has taken a vow to perpetually to protect.

8 Haruka

Many of the most interesting characters in Hit-Monkey are members of the criminal underworld, but Haruka is an exception since she is one of a pair of cops trying to get to the bottom of an outbreak of crime in the city.

She’s the sort of cop that is very much by-the-book, but there’s no denying that she is also a bright detective who is able to see past the truth of appearances. And, just as importantly, she also has a code of honor that governs her actions.

7 Ito

While Haruka is something of an optimist (perhaps even naive), Ito is significantly more cynical, due to the fact that he was betrayed by his own partner at one point in his past. Despite, or perhaps because of, his cynicism, he is also very astute.

He realizes early on, for example, that Hit-Monkey may be more than just an assassin but may, instead, be a potential savior for the city of Tokyo, riddled as it is with all sorts of crime and violence.

6 The Rooster

There are many criminals that populate the world of Hit-Monkey, and one of the most formidably smart is the man known as the Rooster.

He’s the type of criminal that has a plan in place for every eventuality. Not only does he have a number of body doubles that help to deflect people away from him; he also has a lot of blackmail on most of the important people in Tokyo. He’s so sharp, in fact, that he even manages to outsmart Hit-Monkey and Bryce, even though he’s ultimately brought down by Hit-Monkey’s formidable fighting skills.

5 Akiko Yokohama

Like many of the movies in the MCU (most of which have at least one antihero), Hit-Monkey doesn’t have many people who are straightforward villains or heroes, and Akiko is a good example of that dynamic.

Though she has a profound emotional intelligence–which allows her to form an extraordinary attachment and relationship with Hit-Monkey–she is also a cunning political operator. And, though her uncle doesn’t always take her advice, it’s clear that he respects her and her opinions, even when they start to pose a problem to his own political ambitions.

4 Shinji Yokohama

Shinji Yokohama, voiced by George Takei, is one of the wisest and kindest of the characters that appear in the series. He is a very intelligent man, one who sees how politics work, and at the beginning of the series he has successfully shepherded the career of his young protege.

When that protege is killed, he realizes that the only true path forward, and the only way to make sure that the hope that the dead man represented doesn’t die with him, is to take up his mantle and run for office himself, despite the dangers and challenges.

3 Bryce Fowler

Jason Sudeikis provides his own brand of charm to the character of Bryce Fowler, an assassin whose spirit is bound to Hit-Monkey and his fate. Even though he is sarcastic and prone to not taking things seriously, it’s clear that he is clever enough to have been a tremendously successful assassin, someone that people knew they could count on to see the job done, no matter how difficult.

And, just as importantly, it is thanks to his advice and guidance that Hit-Monkey is able to survive in Tokyo and pursue his mission of vengeance and justice.

2 Lady Bullseye

If anyone is able to challenge Bryce in terms of assassinating abilities, it would have to be Lady Bullseye, one of the most formidable assassins to appear in any medium. From the moment that she appears, she shows that she weds a searing intelligence to a ruthlessness that knows no bounds.

Ultimately, she doesn’t care how many people she has to kill during a particular mission, since she enjoys it. She has honed her skills so that they are as sharp as the needles that she wears in her hair.

1 Hit-Monkey

Hit-Monkey is more than just one of the best animal characters in the Marvel world; he’s also a formidably intelligent creature. After all, he manages to not only learn how to use a gun; he also becomes one of the most feared assassins in all of Tokyo.

Even though he has a brutal side and is capable of committing acts of horrendous violence, he also possesses a keen emotional intellect that allows him to connect with both his fellow monkeys and with the humans that populate the series.
