A recent BTS image posted by Hocus Pocus 2 star, Doug Jones, to celebrate the completion of filming has given audiences their first detailed look at the actor’s returning character, Billy Butcherson. The highly anticipated sequel to the 1993 original was first announced to be in official development in October 2019 with Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker all being confirmed to return to their iconic roles as Winifred, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson, respectively. With the filming recently wrapping, the sequel can be expected to hit its intended release date of October 2022, just in time for Halloween.

Set 29 years after the original film, the sequel is said to follow three young high-school students who are forced to deal with the return of the infamous Sanderson sisters on Halloween night in present-day Salem, Massachusetts. Joining Midler, Najimy, Parker, and Jones for this new installment are Whitney Peak as Becca, Lilia Buckingham as Cassie, Belissa Escobedo as Izzy, Tony Hale as Jefry Traske, and Sam Richardson, Hannah Waddingham, and Froy Guitterez in currently undisclosed roles. While the upcoming film will presumably pay homage to the original, cast members Omri Katz, Thora Birch, and Vinessa Shaw are unfortunately not expected to return to their roles as Max, Dani, and Allison, respectively.

In a now-deleted Twitter post, which was later re-uploaded by BingeWatchThis_, Jones shared a photo of himself in the extensive makeup that it takes for him to fully transform into the zombified Billy Butcherson, featuring the best look at the character’s appearance that audiences have received thus far. Just like the original film, the actor appeared with green, rotting skin, shaggy black hair, and iconic black stitching across his lips. Jones captioned the tweet as celebrating the completion of filming on the sequel, teasing fans that Billy would see them in October 2022 once the film releases. Check out the photo below:

While the extensive list of returning characters for the highly anticipated sequel remains iconic, many fans of the original were understandably underwhelmed when the news broke of the original, do-gooding trio, Max, Dani, and Allison, seemingly not returning to the world of the Sanderson sisters. Katz himself, who portrayed Max, revealed to TMZ that he had not even been approached about returning for the sequel, further leading fans astray from the new film. There have been reports from audiences previously not wishing to watch the new film due to these essential Hocus Pocus characters being absent, not believing the original trio of witches to be enough fan service.

With Billy’s extremely faithful appearance to the original film, it can be assumed that the sequel film will greatly honor the characters of the original, even with the missing characters. Furthermore, with the returning aspect of Billy’s stitches across his mouth, cursed upon him by Winifred herself, audiences could possibly see the lovable zombie return over to her side, whether by his own accord or otherwise. Either way, fans will have to patiently wait for the beloved sisters to return once Hocus Pocus 2 hits Disney+ in October 2022.
