The official synopsis for Hocus Pocus 2 teases the return of the Sanderson sisters 29 years after they were first resurrected. The campy, family-friendly Hocus Pocus was first released in 1993 and, despite the popularity it sees today, wasn’t much of a hit. The movie centered on three immortality-seeking witches (Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker) after they’re resurrected by skeptical teen Max (Omri Katz) on Halloween. Eager to resume their nefarious brand of witchcraft, the Sanderson sisters target Max, his sister, and his friend, leading to a wild adventure across Salem, Massachusetts.

Hocus Pocus has become a Halloween cult classic over the years, and at long last, a sequel is finally coming to fruition. Officially greenlit just last year, Hocus Pocus 2 will see all three Sanderson sisters return for another wicked tale. Midler praised the script in the fall of 2020, and now a year later, production has officially kicked off. Hocus Pocus 2 will premiere on Disney+ sometime in late 2022, and it will be directed by Anne Fletcher.

Just one day after Hocus Pocus 2 unveiled an ominous video, Disney has shared the very first synopsis for the film. Though it’s careful not to share details of how the Sanderson sisters have been revived once more, it does reveal their latest mortal adversaries: Three high school students. The Hocus Pocus 2 synopsis is as follows:

It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters who were executed for practicing witchcraft, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to figure out how to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before midnight on All Hallow’s Eve.

On the surface, this feels rather similar to the first movie. There, the Sanderson witches were revived on Halloween and set out to complete their work, only to have three kids get in their way. Hocus Pocus 2 will follow a similar path, though the dynamics between the young heroes should be a bit different. Additionally, the mention of the Sandersons wanting revenge hints that they could start out seeking Max and his allies, only to turn their focus on some newcomers. That could provide a clear tie to the original Hocus Pocus and give the new story an extra layer of intrigue.

However, if the sequel does make mention of Max and the rest, it might be without the actors themselves. Those like Katz and Vinessa Shaw (Allison) have stated they haven’t heard anything about returning for Hocus Pocus 2, and as filming is underway now, that isn’t a great sign for their roles. Fans would like to see as many original cast members return as possible, and as Midler, Najimy, and Parker are all on board, one has to hope Hocus Pocus 2 will find a way to include the others. Regardless of who else is involved, something wicked this way comes, and audiences couldn’t be more excited.
