Fans of Hollow Knight will unfortunately not be receiving any news about sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong at E3 2021, a representative of developer Team Cherry has confirmed. As the first game has essentially reached cult classic status among Metroidvania players since it released in 2017, this is sure to be saddening news. Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced in February 2019, and despite how much time has elapsed, development updates have been scant. To date, only one trailer exists and information surrounding the game’s plot is fairly minimal.

Of course, none of this detracts from Hollow Knight: Silksong‘s potential for greatness when it does arrive. Hollow Knight is the only game Team Cherry has completed thus far, and the fruits of its labor received nearly universal acclaim. Additionally, the first game took roughly four years to release and was extremely well polished because of it. This applies to virtually every aspect of the game: the combat was well-balanced, its environments were beautiful, and the sound and art design were incredibly unique. When looking at the trailers and artwork for Silksong, it appears as though many of those aspects will remain just as impressive, if not more so.

The news of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s E3 absence comes via a Reddit post, which shared a Discord message from Matthew “Leth” Griffin, a contractor who handles Team Cherry’s PR. In his message, he writes, “Hey guys! I just wanted to pop in to let you know that Team Cherry does not have any announcements/blogs scheduled for E3 this year,” followed by the Team Cherry logo. Naturally, many of the comments under this post were disappointed by the news. However, there were a good number of commenters who also seemed hopeful that this meant that Team Cherry was hard at work putting the finishing touches on Hollow Knight: Silksong.

It’s also possible that this message should be taken with a grain of salt. After all, announcing that there would be no announcement at E3 2021 only to drop a new trailer or release date for the game would be a smart diversion. In fact, many of the post’s commenters speculated as to whether this would happen, though it may not be likely. Others were also hopeful, expressing faith that Team Cherry should be trusted with Hollow Knight’s sequel and that they were possibly adding post-game content. In a sense, this show of support from the community is further evidence of how wonderful of a job the developer did with its first game, having earned enough good will from its fans to take as long as it needs with Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Whenever the sequel does release, it will certainly have a high bar to meet. Hollow Knight, along with titles like Ori and the Blind Forest and Axiom Verge, were instrumental in revitalizing the Metroidvania genre. This renewed interest in the genre contributed to the demand for games like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, which also came to fruition as part of a Kickstarter campaign. As E3 2021 rapidly approaches this June, it will be interesting to see what directions other indie games go in and whether fans of Metroidvania titles will have something to hold them over until Hollow Knight: Silksong finally releases.
