A new update is coming to Dead Cells and bringing with it an iconic mechanic borrowed from Hollow Knight: the pogo jump. The 2017 roguelike hit has been receiving tons of support from developer Motion Twin over the past few years, adding new features like the Practice Makes Perfect training room as recently as this September.

When it comes to popular indie side-scrollers released in 2017, Hollow Knight and Dead Cells are among the most talked-about and revered. While the latter is a stylish rogue-like akin to games like Hades or The Binding of Isaac, the former is a dark, thoughtful Metroidvania adventure. Something that these games have in common is their difficult, fast-paced approach to combat: the protagonist of Hollow Knight makes use of a tiny nail and utilizes special moves like the so-called “pogo jump” that allows him to boost airtime by down-slashing enemies. Meanwhile, Dead Cells‘ protagonist is a bit more versatile when it comes to weaponry. Neither game is particularly forgiving to new players learning the ropes, but both offer up deep and complex gameplay that keeps things interesting. It’s worth noting that while Hollow Knight has kept its critically acclaimed combat mostly the same since its release, Dead Cells gets regularly updated with new weapons and abilities.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As Eurogamer points out, Dead Cells developer Motion Twin recently Tweeted about a new Hollow Knight-themed update for the game. The Tweet reads “The Knight is a bit too shy to show his face. However he was still nice enough to let us use his weapon! And how cool is it to pogo on enemies?“. An accompanying video shows the Prisoner, the protagonist of Dead Cells, making use of Hollow Knight‘s signature pogo jump to glide across the battlefield. The company went on to announce that the free update will be available for all Dead Cells players on Monday, November 21.

Countless games, including the recent Death’s Door, have been compared to Hollow Knight, and it is generally considered one of the most influential and iconic indie titles released within the past five years. With that said, it makes sense that studios like Motion Twin would be interested in paying homage to the seminal title through unique in-game unlockables and updates. With the addition of this pogo jump, fans of both titles are sure to be pleased.

Dead Cells is quite a mechanically polished game, so the implementation of this new feature should hopefully be pretty smooth. Players will have to see for themselves just how much of an impact this new inclusion makes on the overall gameplay experience. Hollow Knight might not be getting its follow-up Silksong for a while still, but fans might be able to recapture some of the game’s magic with this Dead Cells update.
